5.0 out of 5 stars One for Martial Arts Fans and Film fans 14 Feb 2009
By S J Buck TOP 500 REVIEWER
I've just purchased the region 1 edition which appears identical to this. The film dates from 1978, but you would never guess that. It looks as though it was made yesterday. The picture and sound quality are superb. In its original widescreen this looks stunning.

The story is simple but effective. Chia Hui/Gordon Liu (better known as the actor who played Pei Mei in Kill Bill) plays San Te a rebellious student who decides to learn martial arts at the Shaolin temple so that he can exact revenge on the Manchu.

The heart of this film is San Te's training at the Shaolin temple. Here he must master the 35 chambers, each representing a different skill or technique that is required for him to become a master. The 36th Chamber is his own. It was during one of these training sequences that I realised I had seen a small part of the film before. So it does get shown on TV occasionally.

The region 1 edition has a number of good extras including an interview with Gordon Lui, commentaries and further interviews. Sometimes this film is also known as Shaolin Master Killer.

5.0 out of 5 stars 36th chamber of Shaolin 2 Nov 2009
This is one of the finest martial arts films ever made. There is only one minor flaw I can mention with this film and that is the final fight sequence where Liu Chia-Hui takes on Lo Lieh there is no real ending to the fight as it just shows a few freeze frames after there very exciting battle.

Still this is a great film with some fine training sequences. A must see!

If your familiar with martial films and are a Fan then order this film, one of the old time greats. Gordon Liu's great performance as he always gives 100% effort. The Film of course it about the Chambers of Shoalin in which a rookie learns them all starting from the lowest and progressing to each stage in which every one gets much harder. Every part of this film is interesting and enjoyable. I also recommended you also order Shoaling Challenges Ninja if you haven't seen it. 36th Chambers also includes bonus material including the interviews of today's Gordan Liu. amazing interviews with him as you learn more about the film and how dangerous it was filming using live weapons for the shots.Excellent film a must have DVD to add to your collection.I've seen the the Third installment of the Series The Disciples of the 36Th Chamber, and personally think the First one is the Best. Great remasted DVD and Quality excellent.
