Product Description

Product Description

The race to secure the bid for the Summer Games of 2012 is among the most intense in history. Five of the world's most prominent cities have tossed their hat into the ring for the right to host the most prestigious international event in sports. They have consciously chosen to saddle the immense responsibility that comes with a winning bid. It seems that, more than any impending Summer Games, the 2012 bid has garnered substantial media and public attention and scrutiny well before the host city was due to be decided. Never before has the competition been so close and packed with an almost tangible tension. The five cities to make it to the final round have gone to tremendous lengths to prove to the world that their bid is the most worthy. Madrid, Moscow, Paris, London, and New York are battling it out in this battle of metropolises to see who will be the last city standing in this global political, civic, athletic, and financial battle of pride to be known as the 2012 host city. This book aims to condense what is a mountain of numbers and documents diligently presented by each candidate city into information that is slightly simpler to understand for outsiders to give the reader a clearer view into the rather exclusive and often unforgiving world of planning to host the Summer Games. Nice book 26 Jan 2006
By HolaR
Being a native Londoner, I was eager to read this book about the 5 bid cities for the 2012 Games. It did an excellent job of profiling all of the cities in various categories including budgets, venues, security etc. The reader can analyze for oneself why London won and what factors may have made the decision for the IOC. It's the first book I've come across which covers the back end of what really happens during an Olympic bid campaign. Surely recommended.

This book is recommended if you're interested in how the Olympic games are acquired and run. It offers lots of details of how people and atheletes are effected leading up to and during the run of the games. It also gives a timeline of the games and a detailed timeline of how the games are put together. In addition of good info, the descriptions of the various cities and what each offer the IOC are cool. I like it very much. Its easy to read, informative, and a great reference for those interested in the economics and behind the scenes workings of the Olympic Games. Can't wait for the 2012 Olympics. Chetan Dave's experience in Atlanta and his recognized unique writing style from his novels and other works just adds to the anticipation and thrill that is the Summer Games. Highly Recommended.

Very Informative 26 Jan 2006
By CT - Published on Amazon.com
This book takes a look at the 5 cities which were vying for the 2012 Olympic Bid which eventually went to London. Chetan Dave was very thorough in examining exactly how much effort it takes for a bid committee just to get its proposal on the IOC's table. Everything from the costs of building stadiums, constructing transport infrastructure, obtaining government assistance and more is covered in this book. I personally like to know the little details behind the scenes of a bid and it really gives the reader a nice perspective on the magnitude of such an undertaking. I give it 5 stars just on the amount of research presented.
Boycott the stickers 23 Sep 2011

I buy many books from Amazon and its partners - several a week as a matter of fact. But I'm going to start boycotting sellers like this who use gummy, sticky, unremovable inventory stickers on their book covers. I buy books to hold onto for years, and these stickers always become a mess if - as in this case, they didn't already arrive in that condition. If we as the buying public refused to purchase from such companies - who could (and service wise, should) remove the stickers before shipping or at the very least, find easily peeled stickers. I spent 15 minutes on the mess delivered on this cover. Shame on a company for making its inventory convenience more important than its delivered product quality. Please join in in posting in customer comments those companies doing this so we may all avoid them.
Not worth the time or money 11 April 2011

This book would have been a good read in the time leading up the 2012 election (July 2005), but now it is so out of date that it's almost useless. If you're looking for insight only to the facts of the competing bids then this books will help you, but for most Olympic fans, this book offers little new.
