The Ornette Coleman quartet that recorded the 1959 groundbreaking ATLANTIC classics 'The Shape of Jazz to Come' & 'Change of the Century' reunited in 1987 to perform this electrifying Hamburg concert. Most of the tracks appeared on their album 'In All Languages' recorded previously that year but there are also fascinating versions of 1950s' pieces such as 'Lonely Woman', 'The Sphinx' and 'Turnaround'.
With excellent sound quality and inspired playing from Ornette(alto & trumpet), Don Cherry(cornet), Charlie Haden(bass) & Billy Higgins(drums) this is one of the best live Ornette albums I've heard since his 1965 'Croydon Concert'(see my review). 'The 1987 Hamburg Concert' is an essential part of any Ornette Coleman collection and should appeal to anyone who appreciates adventurous, passionate modern jazz.
