Product Description

One of the best live albums of all time is about to get considerably better. The Allman Brothers Band’s cornerstone LP, At Fillmore East, compiled from the four sets recorded on the weekend of March 12-13, 1971, has been expanded, stretching over six CDs with sixteen unreleased tracks.

This review refers to the 2014 expanded edition.

There are two Allman Brothers titles that are in my top 100 of guitar rock albums. The album this review is about "At Fillmore East" and "Eat A Peach". So when I learned that ALL of the legendary Fillmore East gigs were to be released I got excited. You see the original double vinyl album was made up of the best bits from a multitude of performances recorded over two nights, expertly edited together by producer extraordinaire Tom Dowd giving the listener a seamless and mistake free show. Ever since I'd became aware of the history behind this classic live recording I was very interested in what the bits, that were obviously in the vaults sounded like. I was under the impression that there would only be remnants and was very pleased to learn that all four gigs were still intact on tape.

Some of this leftover material was released in bits and pieces over the years and most recently collected together as the two cd "At Fillmore East (Deluxe Edition)" in 2003. Some other takes were also compiled on to cd for the second disc of the "Eat a Peach -Deluxe-" set released in 2006. I thought that was all we'd ever hear.

I've been a fan since this first came to my notice, about 33 years ago,and for me,this is the greatest amalgam of Jazz,Rock, and Blues that ever there was.The Allmans play it all so well, and this is what music should be,but hardly ever is.The Dead came close, but when they fooled with country,I lost interest, because they didn't do it half as well as Dickie Betts did,but until then were excellent...but no,repeat no live album competes with these lads at the Fillmore, except for(and it's no longer currently available)Van the Man's Too Late to Stop Now,and Live Dead(which now sounds a tad "flat" to me,lacking a bit of the 3D sound I always remembered from the old days).
I'm glad I waited a little to get this at a better price,'cos it's so much nicer to get a deal(even if it's not the best deal around,I believe it was going for £27 on Amazon at one point),but £33 is a snip compared to the previous £45. Cost aside, this is priceless, and the stature of it has not diminished over time.

I bought the original version of this album in 1971 the day it came out. I've worn out half a dozen vinyl copies, there's hardly a week goes by without me listening to all or part of it, it's part of my life. This music still has the ability after forty years to move me and at times send a shiver through me. Even though I know it by heart I can still hear something new. I can't overstate how important this album is to me and now this release The 1971 Recordings, you have no idea how excited I am! Do yourself a favour, buy it, love it, forget all the pretenders go for the real thing.

Having heard this album I cannot agree with the overall view. Anyone who has the expanded 2 cd version of this and Eat a Peach has more than the best that this can offer. Whilst the playing of Duane Allman is amazing a good deal of the album just becomes repetitive with little variation. Only 3 stars from me, not enough to make me buy it.

Excellent! That's what we've waited for in many years:to get the 14 unreleased tracks (out of 37) from the groundbreaking Fillmore Concerts in 1971. Don't hesitate to buy it!

Great buy for Allman Bros. fans & blues fans in general. Listening to the whole package gives you a clear idea of how being at the original concerts must have felt like.

The ultimate 'Fillmore' record. The Brothers on fire with Duane especially at the top of his game. They were a totally unique band, one of a kind. Unmissable!!!
