Book Description

1 Nov 2012
Popular mystery writer Sebastian McCabe is about to conquer a new world with his Sherlock Holmes play 1895. On opening night, however, his Erin, Ohio theatrical debut as both playwright and actor is upstaged by a murder in back of the newly renovated theater. His brother-in-law, Jeff Cody, evicted from his long-time apartment to make room for fiancée Lynda Teal's gun-toting father, is busy trying to keep Lynda's gorgeous and famous mother from hijacking their swiftly approaching wedding. Both men are pulled into the murder investigation by the pleading of Sister Mary Margaret Malone, Lynda's best friend and maid of honor. The dead man was an old flame of the sister - and the chief suspect is a troubled young man she is trying to save. Convinced of his innocence, she wants Mac and Jeff to prove it. The many fans of the first two mirthful mysteries starring McCabe and Cody will be delighted to see how Jeff placates Lynda, pacifies her mother, gets to know her father, keeps the wedding plans on track, and helps Mac solve the mystery. But first he almost gets killed, as usual.

Review

I loved Dan Andriacco's first novel about Sebastian McCabe and Jeff Cody, and I'm delighted to recommend the second, which has a curiously topical touch. --The Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Andriacco's characters and their lives are so very normal and untormented, his writing style so light, and his observations so witty that No Police Like Holmes is an enjoyable, palate-cleansing romp of a mystery with a little Sherlockian education thrown in. Take it with you to the park or the beach and see if you can catch the culprit first! --The Well Read Sherlockian

Cody is engaging enough to make further books in the series welcome. --Publishers Weekly

The title of "The 1895 Murder" by Dan Andriacco refers neatly to a play based on `The Bruce-Partington Plans', written by Professor Sebastian McCabe of St Benignus College, Erin, Ohio. As he proved in "No Police Like Holmes" and "Holmes Sweet Holmes", Mac is a devoted Sherlockian and a highly skilled detective, so when a man is shot dead outside the theatre where he's playing Mycroft Holmes, he and his brother-in-law Jeff Cody are pleased to help find the killer. Well, mostly. Jeff`s mind, naturally, is on his impending wedding and the need for diplomacy with his fiancée's rather unpredictable parents. It's a pleasure to visit Erin again and to watch the solving of a particularly baffling mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book! 11 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a wonderful book! It's the third in Dan Andriacco's Sebastian McCabe and Jeff Cody's series and, in my opinion, it is the best yet. And I really liked the first two books in the series. Dan Andriacco's writing is very very good. The humour, always umpredictable, is always present, and so are the Sherlock Holmes references (a major influence on the writer and its characters). After finishing The 1895 Murder, i feel that both McCabe and Cody are like family now...and reading each of Andriacco's books is like going home after some time out...it feels great!

I can't recommend this book enough. It's a great mistery novel and it's masterfully written. Now, i wonder if someone from the movies industry will notice this and buy the rights for a movie (or three...)...now that would be something else...

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern twist on Sherlock 16 Oct 2012
By Patricia K. Batta - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Sebastian McCabe is a die-hard Sherlock Holmes fan. Unfortunately, his girth makes him an unlikely candidate to play the part in the play based on a Holmes story that Lafcadio Figg convinces him to write. He can, however, appropriate Jeff Cody, his friend and brother-in-law, to play Watson to his Holmes when they are confronted with a real life murder behind the theater on opening night of the play.

The story is told from the self-deprecating viewpoint of Jeff Cody, who balances investigation with marriage plans and problems along with in-law plans and problems. From Cody's interior monologue interpreting and criticising his every move to McCabe's taking on the persona of an Englishman of Holmes' vintage, this mystery is a delight. It does, however, make me wish I had started with the first book in this series!
5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting new series to read 10 May 2013

I love to read!

I thank my teachers for giving me the ability to read and God for the love of reading. I have been fortunate over the years to discover authors who repay my time reading their work with a story that holds my interest, challenges me to figure out where they are going and surprising me with their endings - sometimes I actually get the ending correct. I was lucky to discover some authors early in their careers so that I could grow in my appreciation of them as they continued to write - Tom Clancy, Dennis Lehane, John Sanford, George R. R. Martin and Lee Child as examples.

Now I have located Dan Andriacco and his team "McCabe & Cody". What a wonderful discovery. I normally like to read the books in the order written, so that I can watch as the characters mature from book to book, but reading "The 1895 Murder" first has only whetted my appetite to go to the first book and read them in the order written.

I have already ordered the first in the series "No Police Like Holmes" and anticipate the author's introduction to the characters. I do not think anyone would be disappointed spending their time reading any of Dan Andriacco's books.
5.0 out of 5 stars The 1895 Murder: the Best McCabe/Cody Novel To Date 1 Dec 2012
By Matt Laffey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The 1895 Murder is Dan Andriacco's third offering in the McCabe/Cody series and it's also the finest of the bunch. Being a fan of the first two novels, I thought nothing was going to top No Police Like Holmes - I loved the portrayal of the Sherlockian symposium - but The 1895 Murder (which also happens to be the title of a play written by Sebastian McCabe within the novel) possesses a richness and intelligence that raises the proverbial bar.

Where the first two novels contained a plethora of excellent scenes strung together with a decent narrative thread, The 1895 Murder contains a plethora of excellent scenes held together by an excellent narrative thread.

Put less abstractly, one has the distinct feeling of being 'in the universe' of The 1895 Murder: McCabe and Cody seem like old friends whom you might bump into on the street; you wonder about getting tickets for McCabe's play; you mentally plan a visit to the Chalmers Sherlock Holmes Collection; you expect an invitation for Jeff Cody & Lynda Teal's wedding; you have the urge to prank call the Erin Chief of Police; et cetera.

If you have yet to read any of the McCabe/Cody books I suggest purchasing all 3 novels and then save each one for a rainy, uninterrupted, glorious day of total immersion into the small college town of Erin, Ohio and by proxy the Sherlockian-tinged imagination of Mr Dan Andriacco.
