Book Description

An inspirational book that shows you how just fifteen minutes can help you to start all those jobs you have been putting off as well as helping make those changes to your life that you never quite get round to.

Product Description

The Fifteen Minute Rule sets out to help us tackle those things that we are always putting off: starting an exercise regime, looking for a new job, doing our tax returns or learning a new skill. Or perhaps doing something to improve the quality of life, by learning to fight depression or confront an annoying habit. Perhaps it's simply clearing the huge pile of clutter from your desk. Whatever it is, all you need is fifteen minutes and before you know it, some weeks later, you have accomplished a task you couldn't bring yourself to start.

The hardest thing to overcome when you're trying to start something daunting and new is to actually start. That mountain of paperwork in front of you that looks like it will take hours to go through and hours of mind-numbing sorting is hard to contemplate for most - but fifteen minutes isn't. Fifteen minutes is manageable and can bring minor and major results, each one providing satisfaction and a boost in self-esteem.

This book is for those people who need instant gratification and also those long-term players who recognise the benefits of consistency and dedication.

I read it because it was on offer for 99p - Kindle deal of the day. That felt like an OK price.
Nearly all the advice can be found in other self-help books, plus the inspirational quotes are ones that have been used many times before. It has quite an upbeat feel and promises a great deal about fulfilling potential etc.

The technique itself is a bit like Pomodoro-Lite. You can find details of this technique free on the web.
Basically this is what you need to know:

1) Buy yourself a kitchen timer.
2) Decide what you are going to tackle - the writer uses an example of doing a tax return
3) Make sure you don't need to go to the loo or are desperate to have a cup of tea or make an urgent 'phone call.
4) Set timer for 15 minutes
5) Sit down and Focus completely on task for 15 minutes and STOP when timer goes off.
6) Go off and do something else
7) Keep repeating in 15 minute blocks and you will retrain yourself to get things done.
The idea is that you can do ANYTHING for 15 minutes.

The good thing is - it only cost me 99p and I don't have to look at it on my shelf - I can just delete it from my kindle.
(The reviewer who gave the book 1 star was suspicious of the 5 star reviews, because it was their first review.
This is also my first review.)

The principle is simple. If you have a task which you keep putting off then devote fifteen minutes to it and then stop. If it is something which is going to take a lot of planning then the first fifteen minutes might just involve writing a list of things you need to do in connection with the task. If it is a simple task which you just can't face then fifteen minutes might be all it takes to complete it.

The book is divided into chapters which cover such topics as work, relationships, money etc. The fifteen minute rule can be used for anything including sorting out family quarrels or deciding what qualities you want in a future partner. The point if it is that you can bear to do anything for fifteen minutes and at the end of fifteen minutes you might find you want to continue and complete your task. On the other hand you might find you're still not that keen on it in which case you would just stop and plan another fifteen minutes later on.

I love reading self help books and trying out their suggestions and I found this one of practical use. So far I have used it for such diverse tasks as going through a bathroom cabinet and researching what external help is available for a domestic problem. I can see I will use the principles demonstrated in this useful book and any time I cannot persuade myself to start on a task then I will be setting my timer for fifteen minutes.

Love this book! It is quite true that you can face almost anything - for 15 minutes, and after that no task seems nearly as difficult. Caroline explains how to cope in easy-to-digest chunks, with wide-ranging case studies and lots of humour. Being a compulsive worrier, the Ace Card section appealed to me - I was enchanted by the analogy of my current panic boarding a train, doors closing on it and me watching it depart the station - never to be seen again!

So far so good
This is very convincing book that seems to have some real research knowledge behind it rather than being based simply on personal experience and a bit of folk wisdom. Read more

A good approach
A really useful self-help book with specific advice for getting on with life. I'll buy it in paperback to pass on to others I know who might benefit from it.

Suspicious of many of the reviews too
I agree with other reviewers and commentators who think many of the 5 star reviews are a bit iffy. So many of them are comprehensivly optimistic and overly positive endorsements... Read more

These reviews are all by people for whom it's their first review - coincidence? It does not fill me with much confidence. Read more
