Product Description

Seattle sci-fi author Robert Blevins' third novel is an exciting tale in the spirit of works such as Marooned and Red Planet. A new U.S. President with vision has challenged NASA to do the impossible - launch a manned mission to Mars within four years, when Earth and Mars make their closest approach in a decade. The Mars 1 mission is a calculated risk and the stakes are high for both NASA and the Canadian Space Agency, who have combined forces to make it happen.

Conflict between a stubborn mission commander and the woman assigned to get everyone safely to the Martian surface increases those risks. As the world holds its breath, Mission Commander Michael Walker, MEV lander pilot Anna Johnson, and Mission Specialist Dale McKendrick roll the dice in a gamble unprecedented in space exploration. The gamble turns into a fight for survival when they find themselves stranded, out of contact with Earth, and days from running out of oxygen. Robert Blevins' previous works include Say Goodbye to the Sun and the time-travel novel, The Corona Incident.

4.0 out of 5 stars out of space 10 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Got this to trial the author. Found I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this read. But I did enjoy it. Equality and diversity rears its head in this and the science might not make NASA too scared but totally plausible main story line with characters that are believable. I found this a great 'page turner' even if on a kindle. Its one as well that does not fully discount the female reader. Although set in space the story itself could have happened anywhere and doesn't get you too tied up in that and its also not too much scientific speech that got you lost but enabled you to follow the story. The story itself doesn't jump around but follows the timeline as it happens and gives you chance to familiarise yourself with the main characters before speeding up.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking story 23 Jan 2013

What a great read. A bit implausable of course regarding the gender conflict and the discovery in the cave but its a good exciting disaster story and well worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Mars yarn 20 Jan 2012
By CascadiaGreenie97520 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoy any kind of reasonably well written Mars fiction so I might be prejudiced in the number of stars I'm giving this. But it is a good, suspenseful story -- more Apollo 13 than Neil Armstrong, as the title hints -- of astronauts and the ingenuity and problem solving that only a "manned" (what's the gender free version of that word - one of the astronauts here is a very good female character!) mission can bring to planetary exploration. It's subtitled The Story of Mars 1, which led me to hope for a sequel until I realized that Mars 1 is simply the name of the mission. However, if the author happens to have a sequel in mind about a Mars 2 mission, I'd definitely want to read that too.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL Mars Expedition Story 15 Mar 2013
By Gwendolyn Norcross - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a wonderul and extremely well written story of the first expedition to Mars. This truly is Science Fiction now that NASA is all but forgotten with our current president and politics. What a shame!

When a new American president takes office he wants NASA to send a team to Mars in less than four years. Wow! There are three main characters, the astronauts, two American men and one Canadian woman, who is the pilot. Of course, there are the chauvinistic attitudes to deal with in addition to the personality and compatability issues. But in the end they must all work together and of course they do. Problems are tackled, solved, and along the way secret discoveries are made and the beauty of the planet is observed and truly appreciated and shared with the reader in only the way a really good writer can convey. This turned out to be an absolutely thrilling ride and a riveting story.

For anyone who likes REAL Science Fiction, this is a must read.
