Mills essentially makes the case for standards versus goals in this book. I think he makes it well, with a lot of points I could find agreement in. Lots of people have made critiques on traditional goal setting, but few come with satisfying alternatives, since at the end of the day, we all want to obtain a certain lifestyle that we not yet possess and we want a plan to make it so. Standards are attractive in that, unlike goals, standards are more likely to affect our actions and experience right now. Defining standards may be a more potent tool to bring about changes in behavior than goals. My only concern is that standards, like goals, can easily become just another unwelcome stressor to add to an already demands-driven lifestyle. Of course it's all how you set them. I find it hard to not set high standards, even though I might currently not be able meet them, which in turn brings about friction.

I think the main benefit of this book is that it gets you thinking about standards. Every person has them, even if they don't explicitly think about them. It's worth getting clear on your standards just for that. Great read.

Luckily I had received a personal recommendation from a good friend to buy this book, and I simply made the purchase on Amazon without thinking about it or reviewing the blurb any further. If I hadn't done that, I might have missed out on a fantastic book.

You see this book argues against the long-standing logic of setting and chasing goals.
I've always been interested in the different philosophies, strategies, and formats of goal setting, and have had a lot of personal success with these mindsets.

So if I had read a sound-bite that this "Standards Guy" is "against setting goals" I might have quickly dismissed the book, and missed out on a great opportunity for learning.

In Derek's defence of being "anti goals" it's more so to do with talking you out of any 1-year, 5-year and 10-year goals, rather than a to-do list of targets and goals you can use to track things in your personal and business life.

Half-way through the book he had completely convinced me with his logic around the 'gaps' and 'holes' in such intensive goal-setting and chasing. Such chasing is for something always in the future, always in the tomorrows, and therefore can lead to a lot of problems with daily joy and pleasure in life.

More than simply dismissing other ideas, or arguing against other philosophies, Derek fills in such gaps with his own "standards" philosophies. It's a tremendous idea, an easy and workable format, and something that I read, learned, took and tested in my own life. It works. Simply, it works. My productivity is still sky-high, but my enjoyment and pleasure and gratitude now goes hand in hand with such productivity, giving it a real reason and motivation to continue.

I remember first seeing this book on a shelf in waterstones, picking it up and wondering what a '10-second philosophy' meant. The first few pages left quite an impression on me but I put it back, making a mental note to return and purchase it. I now understand why...

In the months that followed, I read numerous books that helped create and hone my knowledge and the receptiveness within my mind for the extremely powerful yet simple message Derek Mills speaks about - Standards.

Coupled with the knowledge contained in Jeff Olson's most excellent book, 'The Slight Edge', this is nothing short of amazing! I have enjoyed a state of greater happiness, contentment, confidence, progress and personal growth in the last 6 months compared with any other period in the last three decades.

I can not recommend this book more highly than this. Truly Fantastic Stuff!!!

This book--and Derek Mills--rock!! I've read many a self-help book, but this one is different than the rest. For once, someone has the guts to say that goals don't work; that they set us up to be unhappy; that they take away our enjoyment of the present; and that there is another way to succeed. I first read this book a year ago, and I'm happy to say that I've put Derek's principles into action in my own life and I'm seeing results. I call it "The Blue Bible", because I read a section every day for inspiration.

What makes Derek's story so compelling is that he is a regular guy who was dealing with problems that so many of us face. He was failing at his career, living paycheck to paycheck, not taking enough time off for himself or to be with his family, and was never fully present even when he was with his loved ones. Year after year he set goals, working his tail off, only to discover after 20 years that he was just going in circles and not getting anywhere. That was until he had a "Eureka!" moment, in which he discovered in ten quick seconds that he didn't have to live that way. The wisdom he discovered is spelled out beautifully in this book. Within 3 years of applying his new standards, Derek became a millionaire, a happy one at that. This is a guy who came from a poor family with no advantages. He didn't leave his industry in order to become wealthy, win the lottery, inherit money from a rich uncle, or have some crazy video of a grumpy cat go viral and then get endorsements.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It has changed my life, and I know that it will change yours.
