This compilation includes great classics like U2’s Angel Of Harlem, The Christians’ Harvest For The World, Danny Wilson’s Mary’s Prayer, Billy Ocean’s Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car, Eddy Grant’s Gimme Hope Joanna, Yazz’s The Only Way Is Up, Neneh Cherry’s Buffalo Stance and Bobby McFerrin’s Don’t Worry Be Happy. Styles of the year include rock (U2, Phil Collins, INXS), folk (The Proclaimers), Pop (Kim Wilde, Tiffany, Pet Shop Boys), reggae (Aswad, Eddy Grant) and more. The music represents a great mix of artists that were new (The Christians, Neneh Cherry) and well established at that time (Cher, Billy Ocean, U2). My personal favourites include Yello’s Race, Cherry’s refreshing Buffalo Stance and Yazz’s addictive The Only Way Is Up. There are also re-released hits from an earlier period (The Hollies) or successful remakes (A Groovy Kind Of Love, I Think We’re Alone Now) and quite a number of obscure artists like Julia Fordham, Inner City and Hothouse Flowers. As compilations go, this is a great window on 1988!
