This is a fantastic compilation, featuring many of the well-known artists who dominated the year of 1983. As this double CD album contains 40 tracks from the likes of Duran Duran, Wham!, Culture Club, Elton John and Spandau Ballet. So if you are a fan of early 80s music, then this is a great compilation to have. It is a pity that this album was discontinued, as it is a better compilation that its successor 'Now 1983' of the Millennium Series (released in 1999).
For those who need a recap, 1983 was the year that witnessed 'The Second British Invasion' - thanks to the advent of MTV in 1981 . As for years, few British artists were making it big in the United States. But it was us who had the synth-pop and the pop videos to match, so with MTV gaining new audiences across the States, radio stations were forced to follow suit. Which led to a flood of British artists being played - leading to George Michael, Annie Lennox, Duran Duran and Boy George becoming instant stars. Which meant for the first time since The Beatles, British music had become dominant on the Billboard charts - but the Americans were to come to their defence by unleashing Michael Jackson, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Prince - who would all become stars in this new age where pop videos matter.
This album is great to listen to, and will bring back memories to those who remember when music was great. So if you remember big hair, new romantics, gender benders, Maggie Thatcher and Boy George - then this is for you.
