* "That's Swift" compiles the very best of the non-Fireballs rock instrumentals that Norman Petty cut in the early 1960s, and a rocking little disc it is too. Established professionals like Canada's successful Wes Dakus' Rebels rub shoulders with obscure outfits such as the Tiaras and the Chandelles, all showcasing the patented excitement that Petty pioneered with the Fireballs. There's R&B flavoured items from the Gliders and the Chances, moody melodies from the Techniques, King Pins and Bentleys, and several quasi-surf classics such as `Jetster', `Riptide' and `Termites'. Most of the acts are from New Mexico and West Texas, and feature local guitar heroes like John Wagner (Five Counts) and Ysidro Garcia (Gliders).
* As with all of Ace's releases featuring Norman Petty-produced material, "That's Swift" benefits from years of meticulous tape research, and thus boasts much unissued material and top-notch sound. The packed booklet goes into depth about these recordings, the bands that cut them, and Petty's world-renowned production techniques. Utterly essential for all instrumental and Norman Petty fans alike.

This was an interesting compilation and contains some tracks that I had not previously had within my collection, so it was money well spend.

Great album! Texas Surf rules!,

This review is from: That's Swift: Instrumentals from the Norman Petty Vaults (Audio CD)
I had never heard many of these tunes, but they're great. I couldn't stop laughing at "Termites". Some cheesy and some sophisticated, but all of them just drip 1960s sound and feel. True period pieces, worth preserving and re-playing.
It's easy to imagine a million-watt Mexican radio station in 1963 featuring a profanity-blazing disk jockey like Wolfman Jack blasting a rock-and-roll show with snippets of "Dream Theme" played on the hour as a theme song. It's interesting to compare these instrumental styles with their Texas contemporaries like Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. These were all influential on the budding British Rock of the period including the Beatles, the Shadows, Hank Marvin, etc. This preceeded the naming of the genre "surf". This direction of influence (Texas to England) is not well known among music critics or fans. But many interviews of British musicians of the period have made it clear that the influence was substantial. I recommend that any serious students of music - or any current residents of Animal House style dorms or fraternity houses - get this album and play it for their friends. |
