The topic is an important one at a time when the liberal value of free speech is felt to be under threat, particularly by those who feel that liberalism can be trumped by other values which know better than liberalism about free speech, the place of women, the rights of homosexuals and other views cherished by many in the western world.
Collini's book is a very nice example of philosophy which can be enjoyed by everyone. The language and the structure of the argument is clear and accesible without becoming infantile or descending to forced humour. Although there are only 82 pages they will repay careful re-reading by politicians, journalists and teachers.
