This digitally remastered set comprises two CDs packed with the best musical homages to the Big Apple. From the glamorous openers of Lynne Murray's 'New York, New York' and Fred Astaire's joyous 'Puttin' On The Ritz' to the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald's 'Drop Me Of In Harlem' and Frank Sinatra's 'The Brooklyn Bridge', take the chance to enjoy this musical tour of the city that never sleeps.
This is possibly the best themed compilation I have heard in a very long time. I recall an excellent Gershwin set on the old Castle Pulse label but this new one from Not Now tops even that. The collection covers recordings from a vast period 1934 to 1960 with just as wide array of artists and compiler Tony Watts who was responsible for so many excellent earlier CDs in conjunction with Glenn Gretlund must be congratulated on this one.
The running time totals approx 128 minutes and is a wonderful mixture of mainstream compositions from the likes of Bernstein; Rodgers & Hart; Warren & Dubin; Porter; Jenkins; Gershwin; Berlin; Brown & Freed and Styne & Cahn plus jazz compositions from Strayhorn; Lawlor & Blake; Coltrane; Getz; Prima & Bostic; Grimes & Prysock; Ellington and Evans & Bostic. The liner notes are from Michael Heatley and the whole packaging and sound ranks this one as a "must have".
I'm hitting New York in a couple of months with my family (from the UK) and bought this as a laugh. It's splendid! Full of songs from a certain era and compiled with wit and understanding. Great value.
