Product Description

Sitcom legend Mollie Sugden (Are You Being Served?) stars as Ida Willis, a fear-inspiring housekeeper who finds herself in a rather unusual situation when she goes to work for doctor Robert Price and his model wife, Angie: having moved into the couple's London flat, she gradually realises that Robert is, in fact, the son she gave up for adoption as a baby. Once she's got over the shock, Ida starts to make her maternal presence felt, and Robert's adoptive mother finds that she suddenly has some very unwelcome competition... Written by Pam Valentine and Michael Ashton (You're Only Young Twice), That's My Boy was an enduring success for Yorkshire Television, running for five series and two specials between 1981 and 1986. This release contains the complete second series, first screened in 1983.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better with age. 24 Nov 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This series is even better than the first. Now that the characters have been established, we get much more comic value out of them. The first series introduced them all, the second takes advantage of that.

The situations are funnier and the anticipation of what the actors will say next is a testament to how well this ITV comedy is structured. It is old fashioned by today's standards, but that is part of it's charm. I always think of this show as a perfect Friday or Sunday evening's viewing. It is gentle, funny and above all, it is a sincere feelgood show. Watching this programme is like drinking the perfect cup of tea, comforting and wonderful.

I hope you enjoy this show as much as I do. It may be old, but somethings just get better with age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thats my boy 2 2 July 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
The second series of this fabulous comedy "That's my boy" is even better than the first series. The first series had been excellent and everything went from strength to strength with this second series.
Everybody is more settled this time. The cast seems more relaxed and the character roles are now established.
In series one, Mollie Sugden (Are You Being Served?) starred as Ida Willis. She went to work for a Dr Robert Price and his wife Angie. Then she discovered that Robert, was in fact her son that she had given up for adoption when he was a baby. From then on she calls him Shane, (the name she originally chose for him when he was born) Ida is maternal; as she tries to catch up with the years she lost. But she also struggles with Robert's adoptive mother, who finds that she now has some very unwelcome competition.
Here in series two we see more comic capers of the main characters. Pam Valentine and Michael Ashton wrote the series and it is very funny. There are some really good comic moments. Molly Sugden is excellent and the script for her character is better than series one and it gives her a chance to shine even brighter. She creates a wonderful character and her timing, delivery and expression are all wonderful. Ida is a loveable character with quick and funny answers to everything.

This is a good fun and pleasant comedy that ran for a long five series including Christmas specials.
Mollie Sugden is best remembered for Are you being served, and it's easy to forget the other great work she did. This is an example of that great work. That's My Boy was an enduring success for Yorkshire Television.
This product has only one disc containing the whole second series. There are no subtitles but the sound and picture are all good in this very good show from 1982.
If you are a fan of Are you being served, or Mollie Sugden you will like this. It's a gentle comedy with a feel good factor.

A thoroughly enjoyable series where Mollie Sugden shines yet again !

A word for series collector's though, Network have incorrectly labelled this as COMPLETE SERIES, it is not !

The Chistmas Special "Cold Turkey" which is Episode 9 is missing BUT can be found on another Network DVD release "ITV Classic Christmas Comedy"

Some of the episodes have the Yorkshire Television yellow chevron logo at the beginning, some don't. All have break bumpers.

The quality of this release is higher than the NTSC version released in US, obviously because it is PAL but also the duplication media didn't have as much VT dropouts so a better maser must have bene used.

There are no extras on this disc, no subtitles and the picture is presented in 4:3 format as it was recorded. The sound is mono of course. The episodes are uncut.

Amazon should take the missing episode up with Network DVD as this series is technically not complete as the packaging states.

UPDATE *** Network DVD have stated that this episode will be featured on Series 3 release ****

I bought this as I used to watch this series as a child. The series is well written and is typically 80;s sitcom- there is a nice cosy feel to it - relive your youth
