This is the 1st single that was issued by Elvis Presley. At the time the record was just a local hit in Memphis, 5 more singles followed over the next couple of years, that also had that success.
This (like the other 5) was recorded for small Memphis based label Sun. At the time the label had no capibilty to produced big hit's on a national (let alone a worldwide scale). The simply didn't have funds to have big hit's outside Memphis. However, RCA records bought Presley's contract from Sun in 1958 and his debut outing on that label was an instant smash, that made him a household name around the world. RCA even had to borrow other record companies pressing plants to keep up with demand.
Elvis loved rocking and rolling, but at the time this was out in 1954, all he wanted to be was a country singer. However, Sam Phillips producer and Sun label owner, knew Elvis had hit potential as a rocker and encoured him to sing Rock as well as Country.
Elvis changed both music and the world at large and by the time he died too young in 1977 he had left a legacy that was the envy of a million other pretenders. That legacy is still as alive today as it ever was. This is the record that started it all.
