5.0 out of 5 stars Music that bites, 7 May 2011
The Bear Family series named for an expression used by disc jockey Dewey Philips and taken up as a song by one Danny Wolfe presents the original version of a song which was totally wasted.Sam Philips at Sun was sent a tape by one Curtis Hobock and along with other tapes was dumped in the vaults and not till the 90s did it see light of day when there was a blitz to find more unknown stuff The Charly CD box Rockabilly Meltdown-too late for Hoback to even know the tapes he sent Sun had been issued! In other words Hobock was never signed by Sun and its not known just how an obscure part time country star had recorded a version of a Tin Pan Alley song
Meanwhile its only recently emerged just who Billy The Kid was and who he wasn't-which goes back again to Sun and Billy The Kid Emerson who cut the original Red Hot.
So Apron Strings was actually discovered in 1959 by the British via the demos sent to Denmark Street and its where Cliff Richard decided to record it as the B side to Living Doll. There are really 2 possibilities-either he was David Hill (Alddin recording artist also known as David Hess and David Dante who cut the first version of Speedy Gonzales.Or he was David Schroeder son of part writer Aaron Schroeder.
Hill is the most likely as he later had access to Cliff Richard's version and made a cover of its A side Living Doll
