As obscure as it gets,
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: That'll flat git it... Vol.14, Sun (Audio CD)
When a singer called Gene Simmons is the odd one out here in the sense that he had a hit single in 1964 (his cover of Haunted House) you know what you're up against.
That Sun issued so much stuff up to 1965 that even nowadays more is being dragged out of the vaults for the first time-even some of those tapes where the artistinfo has been lost.If any of the "unknown" stuff sounds like a black guy trying to sound white then it could be Charlie Pride who has told of auditioning for Sun. One who did and was consigned to the vaults was Curtis Hobock though he lasted in the music business for decades.Yet there's quite a story to the song Apron Strings becuase it ended up as a publishers demo in London and came to the attention of no less than Cliff Richard who used it as the B side to Living Doll his first No 1 which also charted in the States and Canada. This is musical failure of a pretty impressive kind and being Elvis Presley's cousin (Glen Honeycutt) or writing a snng for Roy Orbison (Dick Penner) was no guarantee of national success

If you're reading this, you probably know all about the history of Sun records and the great artists that passed through its doors; if you don't, then where you been livin', man? Well, you won't find any of the "big" artists on this cd, but you will find some good old rockabilly cut by a bunch of cats who were looking to be the next Elvis. Some of the cuts were unreleased, others were demos sent by artists hoping to get called back to make a record for Sun. A couple of these artists are unknown. If you can afford the Sun singles collection, that's great, but who won't find any of the cuts on this cd on there. And some of this stuff is pretty good, and stands on its own merits. I second the call on Jimmy Wages; he was just a little too primitive and twisted to have a record released back in the mid 1950's. Both of his tunes on here rock! In fact, out of 31 songs, there are really only about 5 or 6 that I want to skip over. The songs by Dick Penner, Andy Anderson, Malcolm Yelvington, Ernie Barton, and the two unknown artists are particular winners in my book, but I've caught myself singing a bunch of other ones too. Not only do you get a bunch of pretty good to excellent songs, you get a nice fat booklet of liner notes, photographs etc., that is simply first rate. All in all, this is an excellent overview of some obscure and rockin tunes.
