Very Watchable,
By
This review is from: Thatcher: The Final Days [DVD] [1991] (DVD)
This was very watchable fare indeed. Sylvia Syms was eminently convincing as Margaret Thatcher. It rather read like a Greek tragedy where the heroine has no idea about how real the danger is until it is too late. This piece shows how our beloved former Prime Minister lost touch with reality , made bad decisions ( making Geoffry Howe Leader of the House, delaying ERM membership ,bringing in the Poll Tax etc) and thus destroyed her government. It amazed me how she could leave Peter Morrison in charge of her first ballot campaign while she sauntered off to Paris. John Wakeham , Mr Garel - Jones and Richard Ryder could have run a decent effort on the first ballot and seen off Heseltine. As it was made in 1991 it captures the period in which it was set flawlessly.
This drama reminds us of how Margaret Thatcher signed her own political death warrant. It is a well written , factual TV show that conveys the drama of what went on in the Autumn/Winter of 1990. The acting is very good as is the editing. Whether you are a political historian , a fan of excellent drama or both this is a DVD for you. Amazon are selling it at a great price after all ! It is a fair minded program that captures both the great strengths of Margaret Thatcher and her weaknesses too. So for objective viewers it is a worthwhile purchase.

Slimy politicians,

This review is from: Thatcher: The Final Days [DVD] [1991] (DVD)
I was no great lover of Thatcher but credit where credit is due she kept the slimy ministers in her cabinet well under the thumb. She paid for it when they actually developed the courage to take her on after being her whipping boys for about 12 years. Demonstrates what weasels they were and how John Major feigned a toothache to avoid being labelled a conspirator in her downfall and then slipped in to take the top job: The grey man indeed.
Well produced and fine acting by all - well worth a watch.
