Product Description

Avery isn?t everyone?s idea of a model Presbyterian minister. A Velvet Underground fan and student of stand-up comedy, the former bank-worker can?t quite get used to being ?Reverend?. Then there?s his difficulty remembering biblical quotations ...Despite all this, Avery has absolute faith in his ability always to know the right thing to do. Until, that is, a man appears in his east Belfast church and confesses to murder. The only problem is ? this man can?t remember where, when or why he killed. Avery commits himself to finding out the truth of what happened, but if this stranger seems hampered by the limitations of his own memory, then the minister?s hands are tied by his professional and personal responsibilities ? and, as Avery soon realizes, neglecting his own concerns could have disastrous consequences .

COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN 10 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is a fantastic novel and a bit of a departure in theme from his last book, Number 5, which I also highly recommend. I had just intended to read a few pages before bed, but ended up reading until 3am!! Patterson's writing is rich with detail, as always, but this novel provides a narrative rich in suspense as well.
You will not regret buying this book!

I find Glenn Patterson to be very refreshing and profound. This is the 2nd of his books that I have had the pleasure to read. I came across a review of this book while doing a general search on the web for writers f/n'ern ireland and initially bought Burning Your Own. I wanted to learn more about the country I was moving to, get a feel for things without any bias one way or the other. Perhaps it's because I'm not a native, but I feel that his books give a wonderfully unbiased perspective on the place. If only they had taught him in some of my college british lit classes. Now, the challenge is to find anything else on this level about this country;)

A good read 12 April 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The novel starts slowly but stick with it. The story develops into an engaging thriller featuring a Presbyterian Minister with a fondness for The Velvet Underground. Yes, it's a bit implausible but not inconceivable. The location is East Belfast. The time is post ceasfire. After thirty years of violence there's a lot of walking wounded. Rev Ken Avery meets one lost and confused soul who tells a strange story that demands investigation. For a book like this to work, it demands the detail to ring true. By and large I found that it did with one exception. One character ends up in hospital after being beaten up. An account of the incident including his name and occupation are announced in a radio bulletin. That, however, would be unlikely to happen because the release of a name is an invasion of privacy. By and large only the dead are identified by hospitals and police. Victims can waive their right to anonymity but it doesn't look as if it happened in this case. Small point maybe but why can't writers get the business of journalism right? Anyway leaving that minor grump aside, you'll enjoy yourself with this book and get a good insight into the state of limbo in which Northern Ireland exists. No war but no real peace yet.
