The debut of wise-cracking kung-fu private eye Chris O'Brien. The mean streets of Bradford play host to this exciting new talent.

Product Description

Introducing Chris O'Brien, Private Investigator. Martial arts expert, Philosophy graduate, ex-psychiatric nurse and practitioner of Chinese medicine. Bradford's answer to Philip Marlowe. Nasty rumours circulating at Club Zed, one of Bradford's most popular nightclubs, lead to a call up for part-time bouncer and fledgling private eye, Chris O'Brien. Manager Tim Marconi has reason to believe that drugs are being dealt in his club, and that's made him mad. And that's not a good situation for anyone involved. O'Brien and his sidekick, the enthusiastic West Indian, Kelp start sniffing around for clues, confident that it shouldn't be too hard to flush out the culprits. But then the stakes are raised when a dead body turns up outside the club and the police swoop in. Soon Chris is involved in an investigation that will take him across the country and build up to a thrilling, violent and dirty confrontation that will require all his skill and cunning just to stay alive. That Which Doesn't Kill You is an action-packed, witty and sharply observed debut that marks the first appearance of Bradford's wise-cracking kung fu PI, Chris O'Brien.

Welcome to the new world of Chris O'Brian Private Detective. I had the privilege to read the manuscript for this book as it was being writen and enjoyed every page. O'Brian is hired to find out who is messing around with a nightclub owners business.....but then the owners daughter goes missing. Are the events conected? Can O'Brian save the day or is too busy with his friends attractive sister? I recommend this to anyone who likes a smart arse PI and pop culture references..

5.0 out of 5 stars A new British PI, 28 Oct 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: That Which Doesn't Kill You (A & B Crime) (Hardcover)
'That Which Doesn't Kill You' is the first in a very promising British PI series. The hero, Chris O'Brien, is similar to Robert B Parker's Spenser in a lot of ways (his way of speech/comments and observations etc). However, his 'Britishness' goes along way to stop him being a straight Spenser clone.

The book is well written, fast paced and in parts very funny. The martial arts scenes (Wing Chun) are also handled pretty well. The only criticism I have is with the plot, which has no surprises and covers nothing new (but how many PI plots do?).

All in all a good first novel. I'm looking forward to the follow up already!

Author's first has everything: snappy dialogue, likeable characters, good plot, a few laughs, sex, many quoteable lines, good action including martial arts...
