Book Description

'A wonderful, poignant and witty story about the life, loves and struggles of a young woman with learning difficulties.' JILL FRASIER, Founder and Director of healthcare charity, KISSING IT BETTER

Jaya, eighteen, is growing up. To Izzie's alarm, all her daughter wants from life is to get married and have babies. This creates a moral dilemma for Izzie. How can she continue to protect Jaya whilst at the same time letting her go?

Life as the single mum of a learning-disabled daughter is tough. But the boundless love which exists between Izzie and her beautiful, sparky daughter is reward enough in itself, fuelling the energy she pours into fighting Jaya's corner. With little prospect of meaningful employment or continuing education, Izzie wonders if perhaps finding Jaya a 'suitable husband' via an arranged marriage wouldn't be so crazy. But when Jaya falls head over heels for a teaching assistant in her college's Special Educational Needs department, it sets in motion a disastrous sequence of events which turns things around in a way that nobody could ever have foreseen.

"If you enjoy Mike Leigh films you will love this book."

"Utterly engrossing and innovatively written. The complex issues surrounding learning disability are addressed in an honest and thought-provoking manner."

"A brilliant debut novel. One regret - it finished too soon! I want to know more!"

"A refreshingly different book - thoroughly recommended!"

"One of the best autism books for kindle out there."

"Autism fiction: Akin to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time this novel will hopefully inform people, in much the same way, about young people living with disability, and their individual rights and feelings."

"This is not like any other novel I have ever read - It tackles major taboos head-on, but the author does it in a way which is so sensitive and witty, you wonder why they were ever taboos at all!"

That Special Someone has to be one of the best novels about autism and the problems of single parenting ever written. The lightest, most entertaining, of reads on a serious dilemma facing many parents of autistic teens, single parent or not.

About the Author

Tanya Bullock is a college lecturer, writer and award-winning filmmaker. She lives in the West Midlands with her husband and two young children. She has a passion for foreign culture and languages (inherited from her French mother) and, in her youth, travelled extensively throughout Australia, America, Asia and Europe. As a filmmaker, she has gained local recognition, including funding and regional television broadcast, through ITV's First Cut scheme; two nominations for a Royal Television Society Midlands Award, and, in 2010, a Royal Television Society Award in the category of best promotional film. In 2008, she directed a short drama, Second Honeymoon, which was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. On maternity leave in 2011 and in need of a creative outlet, Tanya began to write That Special Someone, the story of a mother's quest to help her learning-disabled daughter find love. It is her first novel.

A superb read. So funny and moving. Wonderfully drawn characters that you root for throughout. Tanya Bullock uses the perspectives of her characters to maximum effect. Anyone who has worked in the field will find this honest and insightful, but you don't need to have come across learning disability to enjoy this brilliantly told story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant- a must read 12 Jun. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A powerful novel that shows the highs and lows of a very special relationship between mother and daughter. All the characters were believable and I cared about what was happening to them.
The authors style of writing whereby each character spoke about their own situation and emotions left me not wanting to put the book down.
My one wish would be that the author writes another novel about Jaya showing how her life has moved forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars A special book 26 July 2014
Format:Paperback
Unhesitatingly five stars. A truly wonderful, thought-provoking and heart-warming read. It's a love story, but not a conventional one, about the uncompromising love of a single mother for her beautiful but learning-challenged daughter.

Isabel has sacrified all her own opportunities for romance, always putting Jaya's welfare first. Now that naive and wilful Jaya is 19, she just wants to get married and have babies. She's beginning to get out of control, her heart set on marriage and motherhood, unaware of the consequences of her actions.

The beautifully drawn and totally convincing characters take it in turns to tell their side of the story.

I was knocked out by the quality of the writing and predict a glowing future for the author. She really does know what it takes to write an unputdownable and unforgettable book.

Although it's a serious subject, it is written with a light touch and bundles of humour, and is never maudlin or depressing.

It is far from the genre of reading that I would normally choose, but having read the first page I was hooked.

A great find, and a story that will stay with me for a long time.
