Product Description

Synopsis
Peter Kay has rightfully been dubbed the King of Comedy in Britain. He is enormously successful - the DVDs That Peter Kay Thing and Phoenix Nights were the fastest sellers of their years of release; a screening of his stand-up show Live at the Bolton Albert Hall was watched by 6.7 million; and with ?(Is This the Way to) Amarillo?? he spent over two months at the top of the singles chart. His comedy is gentle, observational and nostalgic - everyone can relate to it and because of this his fan base really does stretch from 18- to 80-year-olds. Unlike anyone else of his generation he sits comfortably alongside such legends as Eric Morecambe and Les Dawson. People know that he is from Bolton, but not much else. For example, his humble origins and the fact that he was bullied at school for being overweight are rarely discussed. He stopped doing press interviews three years ago and has taken down any biographical information from his website. Now this first biography captures the reasons behind his success and explains the origins of his humour. His story is brought to life through anecdotes relayed by friends and former work colleagues, such as the time he DJ?d at an ex-girlfriend?s wedding and played the Rolling Stones?

4.0 out of 5 stars The bits Peter missed out - but written with affection., 30 Jul 2007

(REAL NAME)
If you enjoyed Peter Kay's The Sound of Laughter, chuckled througout but felt you needed to know a little more, this is a must-read. Johnny Dee writes with full respect for his subject, but fills in the gaps that help you to understand the influences that formed one of the greatest comedy talents Britain has ever seen.
Dee's research was thorough, and there appear to be very few of the annoying little errors that often populate biographies. My 2007 version refers to Peter's appearance in The Producers, so it's bang up to date too.
There are good quality photographs throughout, and pleasingly, none are of the paparazzi "Peter caught in an unguarded moment outside Asda" style.
There's an amusing appendix- The Little Book of Mis-Kay-lany - with twenty pages of Peter-related lists, such as "Song Lyrics in Dialogue" and "Peter Kay's Favourite Theme Tunes". Don't buy this if you are the type that likes shameful revelations - there are none. This book is a celebration, not a dirt-digging exercise. Don't buy this instead of The Sound of Laughter - that's a wonderful book, and hysterically funny. Buy it with TSOL and feel that you really know something of one of the greatest actor-comedians Britain has ever produced.
