Excellent 11 Oct 2011
By SusieH
Format:Paperback
This was excellent, giving a real feeling of the difficulties and fears of living through a war, in an area that was definitely going to be a target for bombs.

Families need to decide whether to stay put, at risk to their lives, or to move to somewhere safer. Widow Eileen Watson decides that she must take up the opportunity to move her children to a more rural area - her three sons are always in trouble and they don't cope well when removed. Her beautiful daughter cannot move with them as she has a scholarship to an excellent school, and is the one who may be able to make something of herself.

Miss Hilda Pickavance, thought by all to be rather posh and unbending, turns out to be anything but, and her life becomes entwined with Eileen's family, to everyone's benefit.

There are always those who will abuse their position in life, and there are interesting examples of this.

This was a good read, really bringing to life the problems of wartime life, and some of the really tough decisions families had to make.

By Ms P. Wilson TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

The Liverpool Girl by Ruth Hamilton is a wonderful read and though based on the Second World War it was filled with so much laughter, passion, sadness, heroism, and everything else in-between. This is a book which will show the reader the real lives of the residents of Scotland Road and the surrounding districts how though most of them lived in poverty never lost that wonderful sense of humour the people of Liverpool are famous for.
Ruth Hamilton filled this book with wonderful characters which showed a true look at the world famous Scotland Road especially around the years of the Second World War.
This road has been written about so many times in so many different books and many of them showed the wonderful community spirit of the residents of this famous area. There is no book which I have enjoyed as much as this one which is based on the Second World War and in this area as I have enjoyed what Ruth Hamilton has written with such wonderful comic timing but also showed the terrible suffering of this time.
Each of the main characters was written with vivid descriptions and the author with her wonderful writing had me caring for each of the characters. The main characters especially Nellie Kennedy and her daughter Eileen and Eileen's children was written with fantastic sense of humours that when I was reading I was laughing so much the tears were pouring down my face. But as strong as the humour was in the book the tragedy and heartache of poverty and war was written with as much depth and strength that the reader was given a full account of what this wonderful community suffered due to poverty and the bombings through this time the book is based on especially the years 1939-1942 until America entered the war and came to Britain's aid.
This book also covers mental illness in a very sympathetic and caring way also depression and how it was treated according to who the patient was at this time. It is clearly a book which has been well researched not only the devastation of Liverpool because of the bombing but how different illnesses were beginning to be treated at this time eg. diabetes, depression, etc
This is a book which I highly recommend as a wonderful read which I am sure the reader will laugh as much as cry with the characters as I have done.
