Book Description

15 Nov 2007
The Royal Welch Fusiliers were present at all Marlborough's great victories; they were one of the six Minden regiments; they fought throughout the Peninsula and were present at Wellington's final glorious victory at Waterloo. In The Great War their officers included the writer poets Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves; their 22 battalions fought not just on the Western Front but at Gallipoli, in Egypt, Palestine, Salonika, Mesopotamia and Italy. In WW2 they won battle honours from the Reichswald to Kohima. More recently they have served with distinction in the war against terror in the Middle East. Like so many famous regiments the RWF are no longer in the British Army's order of battle having been amalgamated into the Royal Regiment of Wales. But this fine book is the lasting memorial to a fiercely proud and greatly admired regiment.

4.0 out of 5 stars A terrific piece of history 20 Aug 2010
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my father - an ex Royal Welch Fusilier himself (93 now and a WW2 veteran). He was delighted with it and still regularly goes back to browse its pages. It is comprehensive, entertaining and nicely written - and yes, it conveys very well just how astonishing are the history and exploits of this great regiment.

5.0 out of 5 stars "That Astonishing Infantry"... 12 Aug 2009
By D.S.Thurlow - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
"That Astonishing Infantry" refers to the heroic performance of the 23rd Regiment of Foot, the Royal Welch Fusilers (RWF), at the Battle of Albuera in Spain, 1811. The battle rates its own chapter in this regimental history of the RWF. From inception in 1689 through amalgamation into the Royal Welch Regiment in 2006, the RWF took part in an astonishing number of campaigns, and served virtually everywhere the British Army has been in three centuries.

Regimental histories can be a mixed lot. This one benefits immensely from its initial authorship by the distinguished military historian Michael Glover and a seamless update by Jonathan Riley. Glover and Riley compress a long story into a lean 268 pages plus a series of entertaining appendices on regimental customs. Inevitably, there is much summary of postings and administrative changes, but the authors capture some of the most noteworthy events in decent detail. Among the highlights: The Battle of Minden in 1759, "bloody" Albuera in 1811, and the relief of the besieged foreign legations in Peking in 1900.

The regiment was expanded to multiple battalions in both World Wars, and their exploits take up nearly half the book. The concluding chapters cover the Irish troubles, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and various expeditions to the former Yugoslavia and the Middle East. The result is a highly readable account, nicely illustrated with maps, drawings, paintings, and photographs, of the enduring courage and professionalism of the Royal Welch Fusilers. "That Astonishing Infantry" is very highly recommended to students of the military art and of the history of the British Army.
