4.0 out of 5 stars First-rate debut offering from ‘4th Dove’, 3 Mar 2003
The chances are that if you don’t know who Martin Roman Rebelski is, you’d certainly be familiar with his work to date. Although not ‘officially’ part of the Doves, he plays their keyboard parts. As such, he is the guy responsible for that thundering piano in “Here It Comes”, the sublime, meandering Wurlitzer in “Sea Song” and the wonderful, cathedral-esque glockenspiel in “Satellites”. Certainly Doves would not sound quite the same without him.

This is Rebelski’s debut offering – and a curious little disc it is too. Entirely instrumental (and with Doves’ Andy Williams on drums on the first track), these eight songs stretch over only half an hour, so it is probably best to regard it as a mini-album or an extended EP. Nevertheless, it sounds oddly fantastic. “Unlikely Tale” is almost a contemporary, forlorn folk hymn, with spidery piano winding its way through unchartered territories; “The Swarm” is Aphex Twin having switched his Absinthe for Horlicks; “Tiddlywink” is just plain strange, full of soft, marching drums, spirally organ and unusual arpeggios.

Fans of Doves probably ought not to expect a natural companion to “Lost Souls” or “The Last Broadcast”. Instead, “Thanks For Your Thoughts” should be quite rightfully regarded as a first-rate, stand-alone effort from a very inventive and talented musician. However, if you are a Doves fan and take ecstatical pleasure in their gorgeous, dreamy, otherworldly instrumental doodlings (such as the B-Sides “Meet Me At The Pier” and “Zither”, or “Firesuite” from the Lost Souls album), then this album, without any doubt at all, will slot into your record collection with ease.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent debut, 11 Jan 2004

Really enjoyed this, one of the best things i've heard in a while. Don't expect doves style songs though but more of an ambient Boards of Canada, Steve Reich style. If you like chilled out instumentals, then you'll like this.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit nothing really..., 5 Nov 2003

I feel a little bit let down.

I loved the first Doves album, Lost Souls. "Sea Song" and "Firesuite" are two of my favourite songs and, in my opinion, what made Lost Souls such a good album is its noodling instrumental parts and repeating themes... created by this guy, Rebelski.

This album lacks the catchy themes and instead offers nothing more than a 'nice' 32 minutes of 'stuff'. I say 'stuff' because five minutes after listening to the album, I've forgotten what I've just heard.

Great to have on in the background, but not really what I was expecting. Maybe that's the problem though... I think I'll put on the Doves.
