I bought this book before my trip to Thailand and I have to say I was rather disappointed.

Firstly it is important to realise that this book is definitely NOT for you if you are a backpacker or just a more economical traveller because the emphasis really is on higher end accommodation. The author's main interest is finding trendy boutique hotels which are rather expensive. There is a small number of cheaper listings, but when there are comments such as "there is plenty in this area for the budget traveller looking to rough it on $20 per night" then you know it's not up to much: I never spend anywhere near $20 during my whole trip and in fact for less than $10 it is possible to have hot water en suite and airconditioning! Secondly the book is written in a different style to other books I've seen; it's more of a travelogue which document's the author's trips and so some places are very sparsely covered. The writing style is good and where the coverage was better this made for an entertaining read, but that isn't really what I was looking for. Finally the maps, of which there are few, are more or less useless. Barely any of them are detailed enough to find even the places listed in the book, let alone navigate a town.

I have been fairly negative in this review but it must be said that this is a well written and informative book in the sections that are well covered. If you are planning more of a luxury trip then it is probably very good but if you are aiming to travel more independently and take budget or mid-range accommodation then look elsewhere.

This book was my Bible for Thailand travel! Great for details 11 Feb 2009
By Jules R. Cattie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
My friend and I used this book as our sole source of information for our 1 month trip to Thailand. It was priceless! Great insights into places to see, stay and eat from Bangkok, Chang Mai, to the beaches and really off the beaten path towns and villages. The food the author suggested was always delicious (and sometimes spicey!!) The train conductor even used our book to show some British travelers where to go in northern Thailand.

Excellent Guide book 20 Feb 2009
By Joseph - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I felt this guide book was extremely informative and helpful during my trip through Thailand. My wife and I travel a fair amount for pleasure each year and this is the best book either of us have ever used. The recomendations for lodging and meals were excellent. The outstanding cuisine in Thailand is one of the reasons for our trip and this book was invaluable in helping us search out the best restaurants.

One of the worst guide books I have ever owned 11 Feb 2009
By Priscilla Kibbee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am a great fan of Moon Handbooks and eagerly awaited this one. It was a huge disappointment. Actually there are only 517 pages not the 600 noted above. Perhaps the publishers left out the meat of the book in the missing pages. The accomodation and food sections are much too brief. Important towns such as Nong Khai near Laos are all but ignored except in the border crossing information, which also has incorrect listings. Mukdahan with another important crossing into Laos doesn't even get a mention, nor does the beautiful mountain village of Nan. I can usually find redeeming features in even a marginal guide book but it has been rough going here. Give it a pass.
