Inspirational and evocative not everyday,
By
This review is from: Thai Street Food (Hardcover)
I love this book. And I loved his first. But this is not a book for cooking everyday food and there is nothing wrong with that. Street food often comprises dishes that are too fiddly to prepare at home, that's why you eat them when you're out. Also, unless you live in SE Asia or are buddies with an exotic food wholesaler, you may struggle to get some of the ingredients to make these dishes. This book is a celebration of the delights, ingredients, drama, bustle and sheer humanity of eating on the streets in Thailand. Reading it took me straight back to Bangkok's Chinatown. The pictures are excellent, the writing evocative and I love that it is coffee table-sized. Read it, immerse yourself and be inspired to cook. Heck, drag it into the kitchen now and again, it's not that heavy. But don't buy it if you want a collection of easy to replicate Thai dishes.

Absolutely superb,
By KLT (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Thai Street Food (Hardcover)
It's been a couple days since I received my copy and I've had a good chance to thoroughly go through the book. Let's start with the negatives - it's a heavy, mammoth-sized book, similar in size/volume to say a Sky HD box but much much heavier. It's by far the largest book I've ever bought, and unfortunately it won't fit on my bookshelf. A slightly smaller and lighter version would have been great (or maybe an iPad app).'Thai Street Food' is a very different book to David Thompson's 'Thai Food' - in terms of style, layout and instructions it's almost the complete opposite with Thai Food being more 'chic' in design. I'm a fan of both books. 'Thai Food' in essence is an encyclopedia of Thai cuisine with a substantial amount of culture and history thrown in. Having tested many recipes I found the instructions at times far too brief. While there were many recipes without a photo (a pet hate of mine). 'Thai Street Food' is extremely thorough with regards to recipe instructions. Each recipe has a beautiful photo of what the finished dish should look like and how it should be presented. There are lots of other artistic and well-presented photos of Thai street life, markets and culture (compliments to the photographer). The cover is low-key, the pages have a similar appearance to recycled paper and overall it comes across as less polished and chic compared to Thai Food (this shouldn't be interpreted as a negative). The understated appearance is completely understandable - this is a book about street food, not Michelin-type food. If your a big fan of Thai food, then this book is a must even with the drawback of the awkward size and weight of the book. I've already book marked lots of recipes I'll be testing in the coming months.

Beautiful in so many different ways,
This review is from: Thai Street Food (Hardcover)
I'd seen the other reviews that mentioned that this book is big, but i still wasn't prepared for the monster that has now taken up residence in our home - its huge!!! But absolutely beautiful. This is so much more than a recipe book, the information in there from the chef is really interesting and the photographs are worthy of their own book. So i guess its really a coffee table book that will also give you the most yummy thai food you coudl ever hope for. We've also got David Thompson's pink book and i find the recipes in that to be quite complex but stunning. This is a nice half way house. Its still quite complex and includes all the unusual ingredients you'd expect from this sort of book, but it all just feels more acheivable at home. I love it, and the only reason it hasn't got 5 stars is because it was too big to fit through the letter box so i had to go and collect it from our depot, which is always annoying. But just so you know - it comes well packed in a proper box so make sure you're going to be in for when it arrives!!
