5.0 out of 5 stars A wide ranging study, 6 May 2004
By B. Tovey (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Greetham's text is a well-written, easy read. The topics covered include palaeography, typefaces, schools of textual criticism, and other related fields. Although each topic is contained within a chapter, Greetham manages to fit an astonishing amount of information into his book. The palaeography chapter, for example, deals with Western scripts from their inception in the ancient world through their medieval and Renaissance development, into the present day, and does so in an illuminating way. His accounts of the various subjects he discusses assume little previous knowledge, and yet manage to inform the reader without being patronising.

Although there are many good book-length studies which discuss each of Greetham's topics at greater length, this book is still a must-have as a general introduction to the processes that feed into academic understanding of texts from the level of production to that of interpretation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid reference work, 10 Jul 1998
By A Customer
For those of us who have witnessed Professor Greetham at one of his "postmodern" lectures (such as this year at Kalamazoo), this book is a positive surprise. It is just a solid reference work which covers all the aspects of textual scholarship concisely and reliably, albeit often quite briefly. The volume includes a good, extensive bibliography. To be recommended.
