Product Description

Product Description

Ancient Egypt is well known for its towering monuments and magnificent statuary, but other aspects of its civilization are less well known, especially its written texts. Now "Texts from the Pyramid Age" provides ready access to new translations of a representative selection of texts ranging from the historically significant to the repetitive formulae of the tomb inscriptions from Old Kingdom Egypt (ca. 2700-2170 B.C.). These royal and private inscriptions, coming from both the secular and religious milieus and from all kinds of physical contexts, not only shed light on the administration, foreign expeditions, and funerary beliefs of the period but also bring to life the Egyptians themselves, revealing how they saw the world and how they wanted the world to see them. Strudwick's helpful introduction to the history and literature of this seminal period provides important background for reading and understanding these historical texts. Like other volumes in the "Writings from the Ancient World" series, this work will soon become a standard with students and scholars alike. Paperback edition is available from the Society of Biblical Literature. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

One of the most qualified scientists to offer a comprehensive translation of the Old Kingdom texts is the well-known Egyptologist Nigel C. Strudwick. For the time being, he is Visiting Professor at the University of Memphis, where teaching Middle Egyptian language for M.A. students. Dr. Strudwick is also the author of an appreciate syntheses on The Administration of Egypt in the Old Kingdom. The volume begins with a useful and absolutely necessary Introduction, through which the author explains the characteristics and structures of the texts he translated. Basically, his intention was to render into English Sethe's Urkunden des alten Reiches, Leipzig, 1933. Later, he added more texts, excluding the Pyramid Texts and the wisdom literature. Through 20 chapters, Dr. Strudwick translates more than 300 texts, providing the scientists and everybody interested in the understanding of the mechanism of the Old Kingdom society with one of the most complete source-book ever wrote by an Egyptologist.

May I offer a suggestion. Anyone who's serious about learning the Egyptian language can download Sethe's Urkunden 1 (1933)from the internet - and compare the hieroglyphs with the excellent translations in this book. Nigel Strudwick covers most of Sethe's first volume of Old Kingdom texts.

Key to the Pyramid Age. 14 Aug 2011

This book is a great source for anyone that wishes to know in there own words the Egyptians of the Old Kingdom from the 3rd to the 6th Dynasties the ages when Egypt built pyramids for its kings. You will find translations of inscriptions from the lowly laborer fot the king to the King himself. There are biographical texts, and mundane events and even some of the queens hopes and desires were recorded and passed down to us from the centers of the Old Kingdom, Memphis to inscriptions by expeditions to quarrying sites and the provinces (nomes). What surprised me was the number that are in my local museum listed in the book and translated form the hieroglyphic language of millenias ago. It is a great source for Egyptian names as well.
