Product Description

Product Description

Based on the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, this third in a series of three volumes provides resources for an entire year of sermons and offers practical help for preachers and others who use the Revised Common Lectionary. Beginning with Advent, this unique and comprehensive resource deals with lectionary texts for Year A. Each of the four texts--the Old Testament, Psalter, Gospel, and Epistle--for each Sunday and important festival day, including Christmas, Ash Wednesday, and Good Friday, is treated. A brief introdution for the day indicates the general thrust of the texts and the relationships among them, emphasizing the interpretation of the texts themselves. Also included are suggestions concerning the implications of the texts for life today.

A Gift for Preachers 25 Sep 2002
This is a wonderful resource book for all those who ever find themselves stuck for something to say when asked to preach. Texts for Preaching is a resource book in the sense that it deals with all four readings (including the Psalms) for each of the Sundays of the Revised Common Lectionary in the Church Year in considerable depth and one can almost always find something to inspire thoughts and points for contemporary application.

The commentaries are all based on the NRSV - a fact which should commend this book to readers in a variety of settings.

Those who know Walter Brueggemann's other works will be unsurprised to learn that this one contains all his normal lucidity of writing and depth of theological insight.

I was so pleased with this book that I have turned to it almost every week of this Year A and had no hesitation whatever in recently ordering its Year B companion online. It's not often one buys a book without even seeing it - but with Texts for Preaching it's a very safe bet!

Helpful Bible Study Tool 6 Nov 2002

If you utilize the NRSV for preaching and teaching in your congregation, then this is a very helpful tool. Each lesson is commented upon in language that is clear and precise and "preachable." In some instances, the content of the commentary presupposes that the reader has some experience with critical or historical examinations of biblical texts, although if one uses the NRSV, that is probably not an incorrect presupposition. Overall, the commentary is clear and thought provoking and helps the preacher/teacher open up the texts nicely.
