Product Description

Product Description

Among the most evocative items to be discovered by archaeologists are the scraps of silk and wool and other fabrics that signal so eloquently their owner's status and concerns. Such clothing and textile finds have figured prominently in excavations of medieval sites in London in the past two decades; they have included knitting, tapestries, silk hair-nets and elaborately patterned oriental, Islamic and Italian fabrics, which reveal for the first time the wide range of cloths available to medieval Londoners; there are beautifully made buttons, and buttonholes and edgings which display superb craftsmanship and a high level of needlework skills; the way that clothes were cut and sewn can be studied in detail. This highly readable account will be of wide general interest; dress historians and archaeologists will also find a wealth of new insights into the fashions, clothing and textile industries of medieval England and Europe. Contents include: The Excavations, Techniques used in Textile Production, Wool Textiles, Goathair Textiles, Linen Textiles, Silk Textiles, Mixed Cloths, Narrow Wares, Sewing Techniques and Tailoring, Dyes. THE AUTHORS Past and present staff of the Museum of London.

Medieval finds from London and if this is what you are interested in, this is the book for you.

It provides you with a list of the excavation sites, the finds, extensive information of how these clothes/fabrics were produced with drawings of the various looms and techniques employed, black and white as well as colour photographs.

Everything is thoroughly researched and explained and even though I do know a lot about textiles, there is a lot of information in here which covers areas I had never heard about, an example is Lampas weaving.

It is a scientifically produced book but readable by anyone.

I throughly recommend this book.

A fascinating and comprehensive book covering the medieval textile and clothing finds from London archaeological excavations. The book is divided into sections dealing with wool, linen and silk cloth, which themselves are divided up by weave type. Narrow wares, braids and netting are also covered, as are the pieces of textile which were large enough to be identified as specific items of clothing. Representative photographs are given and, unlike "Woven into the Earth", scale is given with every single photograph. Additionally, full lists of the items under each section are given, with the relevant details (e.g. weave pattern, twist of warp and weft, dye analysis, etc.).

Most importantly, as with all of the London excavation books I've read, there is enough detail for those undertaking professional study yet the book is easily readable by the interested amateur and, with its logical chapters, is easy to dip into and out of and/or find specific information. My only slight criticism is that some sections are not entirely understandable without at least some specialist knowledge - e.g. the chapter on lampas weave was fascinating, in terms of the designs shown, yet I still don't precisely understand *what* lampas weave is as the description was too technical for me to follow (not being a weaver or someone who studies fabric professionally).

Anywho, for the medieval re-enactor looking to increase their knowledge and authenticity, or just for the interested reader, I thoroughly recommend this fascinating book.

Textiles and Clothing (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) 6 Oct 2008
By Kathleen De Mey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Another book from the series Medieval Finds from Excavations in London and (as far as I can tell) equally thorough and reliable. A treasure trove of information for professional historians and serious non-professionals alike, this book not only lists and describes what was found, but also gives background information on weaving and sewing techniques and probable usage of the items. With rather more text and less enumeration than 'Dress accessories' this book is a little easier to read. Again the numerous pictures and drawings clarify and enliven the text for those who are not familiar with weaving and sewing. (Actually, some basic knowledge of both those crafts is needed at times.)

Wonderful book for the serious student of medieval and early Renaissance costuming. Full of photos and in-depth exploration of primary sources and excellent scholarship.

Useful resource with good pictures 20 Jan 2009
By Catherine Raymond - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
There are increasing numbers, now, of books that describe archaeological finds that provide clues to the material culture of a former age. "Textiles and Clothing" is written in the dry technical style of most such books, but features more, and better, pictures of key finds than many such books do. For the costumer with a bit of archaeological knowledge, this book is immensely useful--but it's not an easy or fun read.
