Review

"Aware of my gaps as far as lagomorphs are concerned, I read books written for rabbit owners, attended lectures and CPD, and bought the BSAVA manual. All this gave me a little confidence, but now, after seeing the Textbook of Rabbit Medicine, I really believe I can offer rabbits (and their owners) the high standard of treatment they require when they come to see me as a veterinarian.
An extremely interesting and authoritative publication which is a must for the practice bookshelf" "Fabienne Dethioux," Veterinary Times, November 2002
book is a fascinating read that provides a wealth of information regarding veterinary medicine and science as it relates to rabbits. Whether you have no prior knowledge of bunnies, or are well versed in all things 'rabbity', this text would be a valuable addition to your bookshelf, or the practice library.
The publication of this book is obviously the culmination of many years of hard work and thorough investigation on the part of an author with a wealth of practical experience and first-hand knowledge. It is both an enjoyable read and a very valuable resource, gining comprehensive coverage of current knowledge in the veterinary care of domestic rabbits." "Hannah O," Veterinary Nursing Times, February 2003
cannot remember ever reading a veterinary textbook from cover to cover upon receiving it. However, this is exactly what I did with Frances Harcourt-Brown's Textbook of Rabbit Medicine.
Harcourt-Brown incorporates her own clinical expertise with the best available clinical evidence and research in her book, making it the best example in exotic pet or laboratory animal medicine of how to practice evidence-based medicine...The freshness of this information and its integration into plausible clinical explanations are why I found her book so enjoyable to read.
The chapter on dental disease as expected, is extensive and illustrated with numerous original drawings and detailed radiographs-this chapter alone m

Product Description

Although a lot has been written on the rabbit, much is anecdotal and aimed at the pet owner rather than the veterinarian. "Textbook of Rabbit Medicine" however, has been specifically written for the veterinary practitioner, using evidence-based material and providing a comprehensive guide to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting pet rabbits. Basic husbandry, behaviour and nutrition are explained within the concept of health and disease. Essential information on biology and physiology is also provided. Unique illustrations based on original dissections offer an additional insight into this complex animal. Frances Harcourt-Brown is a veterinary surgeon with a specific interest in rabbits. She is widely recognised as an expert and has been acclaimed for her research - receiving several awards, including the BSAVAs Melton award for meritorious contribution to small animal practice for her work on dental disease in pet rabbits. "Textbook of Rabbit Medicine" says all there is to say about the pet rabbit: it is an essential purchase for every veterinary practitioner. This title includes illustrations by Nigel Harcourt-Brown.

Frances Harcourt-Brown is a highly respected vet with many years' experience in general practice, and is well known as an expert on rabbits, having published various influential papers on rabbit disease. As a small animal vet who sees more rabbits than most, I have found this book absolutely invaluable. It comprehensively covers all areas of rabbit medicine, and deals both with well-understood and simple conditions, and with those poorly understood at the time of publication (such as Encephalitozoon cuniculi). The illustrations are clear and helpful.
Although the book is clearly written, it is certainly intended for vets rather than pet owners, and I would think it would provide far more detail than the average pet owner would require. Another consideration is that Mrs Harcourt-Brown is British; for me, that's an advantage, but I don't know how many drugs, etc that she mentions would be readily available in other countries. Also, this is a book of medicine, and as such doesn't cover surgical techniques in any detail.
However, I would highly recommend this book to any vet who seriously wants to consolidate their knowledge of rabbit medicine. All veterinary textbooks are expensive, but in my opinion this one more than justifies its cost. I can't think of a case I've treated where it didn't provide me with at least some helpful information.

Rabbit Medicine 25 Oct 2010
By Shazzer
Format:Hardcover
I purchased this book after one of my rabbits was treated by Frances Harcourt Brown. My rabbit suddenly became unable to move the local vet knew nothing of this condition and I had to drive hundreds of miles home to get my rabbit back from another vet who insisted that our rabbit should be put down because she had broken her back / neck etc etc !!!! I supported my partner and Frances Harcourt Brown had to insist that this vet release our bunny to us so she could treat her. In fact our bunny had 'floppy rabbit syndrome' ! Its a sudden thing seems like your bunny is paralysed but they are not! After a weeks treatment by Frances Harcourt Brown our bunny recovered and is now safe and well back with her daughter . Incidentally the other vet told us to show the baby her dead mummy -after she (the vet) had put her down ! They also told us how cruel we were to seek another opinion!
So my recommendation is that this book is for all vets who don't know enough about the treatment of rabbits but also for you if you want to keep your rabbits safe and well. It is a medical textbook but you can google terms you don't know and learn from it. We have 5 house bunnies and we would recommend this book highly. It will teach you things you need to know to be able to talk to your vet about the best care for your bunny
