Book Description

18 April 2011 0415594146 978-0415594141 2

‘Comprehensive and serious, it covers everything that students will need to know.’ – Ioannis Glinavos, Kingston Law School, UK

'A lucid and pragmatic guide to contract law for the undergraduate, an exquisitely crafted analytical authority for the postgraduate and a dependable and concise counsel for the practitioner; this is the case-book that will set the standard in the subject.' - Mel Kenny, Reader in Commercial law, Leicester Law School, UK

This clear and highly accessible volume, presented in a coherent structure, provides full coverage of the topics commonly found in the contract law syllabus, alongside up-to-date illustrative case examples and stimulating commentary.

Written by leading authors in the field, this book takes account of a variety of theoretical perspectives, including economic, relational and empirical conceptions of the law. A meticulous and insightful commentary is provided throughout, illuminating complex areas of law and promoting more detailed analysis of important issues.

Composed of approximately one-quarter authors’ commentaries and three-quarters cases and materials, including academics' articles and extracts from books and Law Commission papers, this book facilitates the development of personal study skills and encourages readers to engage with the leading academic commentaries in the area. Clearly signposted chapter introductions highlight the salient features under discussion and additional reading collected at the end of each chapter guides further study and independent research.

The range of material covered and the straightforward style makes Text, Cases and Materials on Contract Law an invaluable resource for all undergraduate students of contract law.

'Because there are so many text, cases and materials books to choose from, it is often difficult to differentiate them... In some books like this one, there can be (at times) an unbalanced split. Fortunately, Text, Cases and Materials on Contract Law does not suffer from this problem: the cases and materials are not overly long and the text explains the principles (and pulls together the key points) in an impressively lucid way' Student Law Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Contract book, can almost replace a textbook. 23 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have spent many words and many minutes in other reviews referring people to this book. It is the perfect companion to a good Contract textbook and could almost stand in for one if you've got good library facilities to borrow a textbook when needed. It's function is essentially to gather all the useful extracts of cases and journals that you need for the start of excellent mooting preparation, essay writing, and those extra exam bits that get you a first. However, it also contains all the useful qualities of a textbook explaining the law and setting cases in context.

Lecturers will continually tell you to "read this case it's very important" and if you dutifully read a 50 page case every time you hear this much hated sentence then you will soon become a very unhappy person indeed. This book solves that problem by giving you hefty extracts of all the important cases without the benefit of some of their Lordship's more thankless musings. I used this method and ended up with a first in my essay and in the exam so it can't do too much harm!

I'm fortunate enough to be taught by one of the authors, Prof James Devenney and you can tell when reading the book that he has managed to translate his great enthusiasm and titanic knowledge of the subject onto the pages. It's written in a genuinely engaging way that makes it a pleasure to use when researching essays and the like, admittedly not quite bedtime reading but in my opinion as readable as it's possible to make a contract materials book. I thoroughly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A law student 1 Oct 2008
Format:Paperback
This book was one of the main core textbooks that I was told to buy and I got to say it was absolutely brilliant. I managed to get a 2:1 in my exam just by reading the chapters in this book and it helped me a lot when I found it difficult to understand some areas.

I was very pleased with the service I received. The text book came within a number of days and was in excellent condition. It also saved me a couple of pounds, which I would have spent buying the book in my university book shop. I definately recommend buying law text books of amazon for law students
