Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Opinion is mixed as to whether Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a worthy successor to Tobe Hooper's seminal slasher flick. The story picks up 14 years after the events of the first film, which have long since passed into local legend. On a relentless search for the maniacs who murdered his wheelchair-bound nephew Franklin, Lieutenant "Lefty" Enright (Dennis Hopper) is drawn to the scene of a brutal roadside killing in Red River, Texas. He soon forms an alliance with Stretch (Caroline Williams), a feisty female radio DJ who inadvertently broadcasts the chainsaw murder of two drunken frat boys live on her late-night phone-in request show. At Lefty's request she replays the tape on air and soon after receives a terrifying visit from two deranged fans, Leatherface and Chop Top, who are intent on killing her. Stretch escapes, and together with Lefty follows the trail of the gruesome twosome into the bowels of the deserted San Jacinto historical theme park, which hides a Leatherface house of horrors.

In contrast to the chilling, snuff movie scenario of the original, Hooper whoops it up with this 1986 sequel brimming with gruesome humour, without welching on the thrills. Writer LM Kit Carson (Paris, Texas) reworks Leatherface into a tragic, almost naïve figure trapped beneath a horrific façade and fleshes out his thoroughly dysfunctional family with the introduction of baby brother ChopTop--a steel-plated Vietnam vet. Leatherface's old man (now called Drayton Sawyer) and Grandpa are carried over from the first film. Dennis Hopper is clean cut but dead-eyed in a typically manic performance as the cowboy detective driven by revenge--think of an embryonic Frank Booth from Blue Velvet with a fetish for power tools. TCM2 is a wildly imaginative experiment in terror that stays true to its trashy exploitation roots.

On the DVD: The lack of extra features on this disc (apart from the standard theatrical trailer) is a major oversight given that TCM2 has had no previous theatrical or video release in the UK. A director's commentary would have been especially welcome, as well as the addition of the deleted scenes featured on the US laserdisc and special edition VHS versions of this film. Static menus provide options to watch the film with English, Spanish or Italian dialogue and subtitles in Danish, Norweigian and Swedish. The main feature is of more than adequate picture quality and presented in 16:9 anamorphic format. --Chris Campion

1.0 out of 5 stars What a Disappointment, 7 Jan 2008
By David Rush "Fasten your seatbelts, its going ... (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
If you're expecting a film similar in quality to the excellent original, then you are going to be very let down by this woefully bad sequel. Dennis Hopper hams it up as the uncle of two of the original's victims - Sally and Franklin - who is out for revenge on the cannibal family from the first film, who are now living in an abandoned amusement park in rural Texas. When a plucky radio DJ overhears the murder of a pair of teenagers during her broadcast, the family is out to get rid of her and remain unknown. This film is much gorier than the first and features a new member of the famous family in the repulsive Chop Top, who was apparently fighting in the war during the first film. The film appears to be a parody of the original, but is simply not funny. Unless you find the thought of a woman being forced to wear the cut-off face of her boyfriend amusing, then it's safe to say that you won't be laughing. There is also a lot of noise - whether it is necessary for the plot or not - which may force you to turn down the volume or turn it off completely out of utter irritation. Tobe Hooper - who did so well with the original and also his brilliant Poltergeist - should have known better.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit better than I expected, not as good as I hoped, 10 Sep 2001
By A Customer
I loved the original Texas Chainsaw movie. So did a lot of other people, who then proceeded to give this Tobe Hooper offering a critical evisceration worthy of Leatherface and company. Honestly, this isn't too bad: it starts well and ends well, Tom Savini's gore effects are nice and splattery (main difference between this and the first TCM is that all the bloodshed the original implied now makes for a lot of the red stuff onscreen and besides, what else do you expect from the boy Savini?), there is plenty of darkly comic dialogue. The film's bad points are that it goes on too long with aimless running/screaming interludes and becomes Texas Chainsaw redux, which I suppose is the same argument you could use to condemn a Halloween, Friday The 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street sequel, the point being you've seen that sort of thing before. On the whole, it was fairly good and what other chance do you get to see Dennis Hopper wielding a chainsaw in what is probably his ultimate "nutter for hire" role? Just don't expect anything to match the first Chainsaw.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Don't cry, my brother...", 16 Nov 2003
By Michael Crane - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
If you're looking for a movie about the human spirit, or a movie that can change the world... then find something else. If you're looking for a brutal and disturbing slasher flick that's both ridiculous and cheesy (but is still a good time), then "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" is the perfect thing for you. From the original source behind "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," Tobe Hooper brings forth a disgusting and sometimes humorous sequel that will make you feel guilty for enjoying it.

Dennis Hopper plays a Texas Ranger, Lefty, who's bent on revenge and wants compensation in blood for the murder of his brother's children (from the original movie). A radio DJ may be his only hope of getting the murderers responsible, as she claims to have a tape of one of the murders taking place. The tape happened when a couple of goofballs decided to call her show, only to end up running into a chainsaw murderer and ending up dead. Lefty advises her to play the tape on air to draw the killer or killers out... the only problem is that the cannibalistic family has a record of "taking care" of witnesses in their own way. The results all lead up to a terribly disturbing and disgusting slasher flick that you won't forget (even if you want to).

Now, the movie is enjoyable if you take these few things under consideration: 1) This movie was not made with hopes of making it on the AFI list of Greatest Movies one day. 2) It doesn't live up to the original, so don't even think of setting your expectations that high. 3) This is a ridiculous and sometimes cheesy movie that its only purpose is really to shock, disgust, and perhaps even get a rise out of you. If you take all of these things into account, the chances of you enjoying this movie will increase.

What really makes the movie work is Dennis Hopper. He is usually a joy to watch in any movie, and this one is no exception. I don't know if the movie would be that great had he not been in it, as he really takes his character to the limit (and has fun in the process). The sequel is much more disgusting and violent than the original, but isn't really as shocking. Still, it is a pretty enjoyable flick if you're in the right mood and take it for what it is.

All in all, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" is a great time if you know what you are getting yourself into and you know what to expect. Again, this is not "Citizen Kane" we're talking about; this is a stupid and goofy slasher flick that's only aim is some kind of entertainment. And, I happen to think that it achieves that, at least in my eyes. If you're looking for a goofy and disturbing slasher flick, this may be the one for you.
