Biography

Michelle Shocked - traveller, troubadour, a “picker-poet,”as they say in Texas. As a young feminist, she left Texas to travel, Kerouac-style, and was caught up in Reagan-era grassroots politics. Her musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording made around a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony Walkman. Released in England as ‘The Texas Campfire Tapes’ without ... I first heard this album years ago when a friend played it to me. I have had a tape copy ever since, but listen to it so often (at least twice a year, every year) that I thought I should buy it. It is a cracking collection of songs and I am fairly convinced that the whole album was indeed recorded by a campfire, presumably in Texas !
I am not familiar with anything else Michelle Shocked has done and keep meaning to try it out, but whatever her other albums are like, this is a very good one.

Like so many other artists (see Tracy Chapman), Michelle Shocked's early music is consistently impressive, and consequently eclipses her more recent work. That's not to say her recent albums are rubbish - it's just that 'The Texas campfire tapes' and 'Short sharp shocked' were so so good.
The story goes that this album was recorded on a Walkman, sitting beside a campfire at an eighties folk festival. Listening carefully, you can believe it - the sound of people yelling, trucks revving and crickets chirping can be heard behind Shocked's singing and strumming. '5 a.m in Amsterdam', 'The ballad of Patch-eye and Meg' and 'The secret to a long life (is knowing when it's time to go)' are my favourites here. Get this for its chilled-out, reflective mood, then get 'Short sharp shocked' for its sassiness!

Given it was recorded on a casette player in the woods years ago, the sound quality is surprisingly good and clear. The best was yet to come, and for achingly well crafted and sung songs i would go to her later albums (but not the very latest, which, are truly awful). This is Michelle, and her guitar, just singing live and spontaeneously. A joy.

raw, yet smooth. To me pure nostalgia. Michelle Shocked must be one of the world's most underrated musicians, especially her early stuff .. If you only buy one album a year this must be it. Brilliant

Relaxed and witty, this album travels from sea-shanty tale telling to contemporary acuity whilst not leaving the intimacy of the Texas campfire around which it was recorded. Listen out for that 4x4 truck gunning up the red dust backroads and the broken string announcement interrupting the lazy delivery of memorable images. San Francisco is evoked quintessentially to the extent that on a recent visit the lyric both haunted and enhanced the actual city, I'll leave you to discover that particular line.
