Product Description

Synopsis

Testing is an essential part of software development. In recent years software testing has become a profession and career path. The Testing Practitioner provides a comprehensive description of the state-of-art in software testing and in addition addresses a number of new challenges and topics for the test practitioner. The seven sections in this book are arranged to follow the ISEB Practitioner Syllabus in Software Testing, covering materials found essential for test engineers and test managers working in real-world businesses. Following the syllabus this book deals with test principles, test process, test management, risk management, inspections and reviews, test techniques (both functional and non-functional), incident management, test process improvement, tools and people issues. Some of the specific topics included are test planning, risk based testing, completion criteria, estimation, static analysis, exploratory testing, performance testing, usability testing and data driven testing. This book is intended to meet the practical needs of both test engineers and test managers, especially those preparing for the ISEB Practitioner Exam (Information Systems Examination Board).

A great reference for the new and experienced test practitioner applying test principles and structured testing to software development. This book may not contain all the answers you need, but it will surely set you off in the right direction. This book is a collection of works gathered from 24 authors with a wealth of experience in software testing. The compilation has been edited by Erik van Veenendall, managing director and senior consultant of Improve Quality Services BV and lecturer at Eindhoven University of Technology. He has over 15 years experience in structured testing and is the author of a number of software quality and testing books, a regular speaker at conferences and a leading trainer in the field of software testing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, useful for the practitioner exam, 13 Dec 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Testing Practitioner (Paperback)
This book contains some interesting chapters written by testing professionals from all over the world.
Studying with this book did help me pass the ISEB Practitioner Certificate in Software Testing.
The only negative thing I can say is that the bugs in the text (typos etc) can be quite off-putting for native English speakers.

This review is from: Testing Practitioner (Paperback)
As a software tester for the last 8 years, I needed a book that would give an in-depth overview of software testing; in particular with software test management. This book does the job and also delves into project management techniques. To date, I have bought close to 20 software testing books, but I consider this one an excellent and well written piece of work which is always handy to have as a reference manual (how I wish there was an electronic copy).

First Impressions
First impressions of a book are very important particularly is you want the reader to continue reading! I guess most of us when we look to buy a book will 'flick' though the pages and ask ourselves "is this what I am looking for?". As I 'flicked' through the pages of "The Testing Practitioner", I found myself saying "there is some excellent material in here" - and I wasn't disappointed. Although a fairly large book, it was well laid out with excellent contents and index to help you find what you are looking for. This will certainly be beneficial if students are using this book to revise for the ISEB Practitioner Exam.

Reasons why I like the book
Those people that know me well will understand when I say "I don't really do books". I much prefer talking to people and listening rather than reading - I guess it is a personal thing. However I liked this book for a number of reasons. Firstly I believe that you can read this book cover to cover. It follows a good pattern, starting with basics of testing, test process and risk leading to people issues in software testing. I began reading the book in this way but soon found I wanted to jump to 'favourite' topics and discovered that you can "dip" into chapters without loosing any of the context, which suits my style of reading.

I liked the fact that each chapter is written by a different author. This allows variety as well as expertise to flow from the book. Some people feel that you loose continuity when you have so many authors. However because of the individual self-contained chapters, this was not the case with this book. Having different authors, in my opinion, enhances the book.

Why we decided to use this book for the Practitioner Course
We wanted to provide an additional resource to the students attending our ISEB Practitioner Course. The book closely follows the ISEB Practitioner Syllabus and although it doesn't have everything specified in the syllabus and will not be sufficient for those wanting to delve deeper into certain topics, we felt that it gave our students extra study material to complement our own courseware. I feel that this book will not only be beneficial to those wanting to take the ISEB Practitioner Exam, but will be useful to all testing practitioners.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 14 Oct 2011

This review is from: Testing Practitioner (Paperback)
I was expecting a very authoritative volume. This collection of information just skims the surface - no new knowledge or techniques were expressed.
