Format: Audio CD
The Wake, along with Section 25 and A Certain Ratio were one of a trio of bands signed to Factory Records who never got the recognition they deserved. Looking very much like New Order, but sounding more indie they could today be seen as a sort of prototype Chromatics.

Compiling a "best of" The Wake is a bit of a tricky one as they were never a prolific band (I suspect through lack of opportunity, rather than unproductivity). For me their best album, and the one all newcomers should gravitate towards, is 1985's Here Comes Everybody & Singles although this latest CD does contain four of the eight songs from that LP, as well as tracks spanning their Factory career. The group also recorded two LPs for Bristol's Sarah Records which are somewhat under-represented on this compilation - with only debut Sarah single "Crush The Flowers" and "Firestone Tyres", from their "Make It Loud" album making the cut. Whilst by then The Wake were more indie-sounding and maybe also a bit more inconsistent, I don't think that just the two tracks does them justice here. I for one would have loved to hear "Carbrain" ("Crush The Flowers" B-side - a song that regularly plays in my head, and one of their best) again.

Packaging-wise this is one of the best editions yet from Factory Benelux since they were resurrected by parent label LTM Records. The generic Factory Records' cassette box artwork (by Peter Saville) is used to good effect here and the digipack also has some striking black and white photographs of the band.

All in all a great presentation, although it as to be said - probably due to limitations of the source material - that the sound quality is not always the best.

The Wake is one of my favorite post punk band 22 Oct. 2014

Just got my copy today, and it's blasting on my player. .. The Wake is one of my favorite post punk band. Their music to me is a fine balance of sound- upbeat but not too loud, calm but will not put you to sleep .Interesting guitar, bass, drums, and voice woven into seminal sound that captures a mood between melancholy and hope. My favorite album is Here Comes Everybody...But this album compiles their best work- which will always be subjective. This vinyl has an extra cd that contains raw materials that were archived together with the works of Joy Division. The extra CD is equally interesting to listen to. Take note that the CD version of Testament has some difference in the line up of songs. So I did order it too. I love The Wake,,they keep me awake between melencholy and hope! I love that mood :-) and this band delivers it :-)
