Product Description

Product Description

A person's Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is, arguably, one of their most important characteristics. It is believed that you can predict a person's behaviour better from their IQ than from any other single piece of information about them. Job applicants worldwide are likely to be given a psychological test to determine how suited they are for a particular post, our children may be given ability tests if they seem to have problems at school or as part of a career counselling process and when the elderly are admitted to hospital a simple test is often used to alert physicians to the possibility of dementia. However, IQ is also an area of psychology rife with myth and misunderstanding. Is it really possible to describe all of a person's myriad abilities using one number, their IQ? What influences how well a particular person will perform in a test? Can we improve our performance on these tests through practice or training? "The IQ Book" aims to address these issues and many more.

From the Author

I have written the book for the interested lay-person with no psychological background (indeed, when I was writing it I imagined I was explaining things to Brian and Joan Jepson - my mother's next door neighbours to whom the book is dedicated).

This book answers all my questions and more that I had after doing the second Test the Nation IQ test on Sunday night. Dr Cooper is a tv natural and his fluent style on tv translates easily to his accompanying book.

The book is based on fact, rather than opinion, and the book is peppered with references for those who want to follow something up in detail. The book explains the history behind IQ in a straightforward way so that anyone, particularly those who don't have a background in psychology, can understand it. He also looks at boosting your IQ and what a high or low IQ predicts in our everyday life. He tells us how to interpret test scores, how our abilities change over time and how IQ relates to everyday life. Not only does he tell you how to boost your IQ but he reveals the tricks of the test and what to look out for when faced with certain types of commonly used question. This all proves invaluable when faced with the IQ test that is included, with answers, at the back of the book.

I can thoroughly recommend this book as the writing style is so down to earth and the text told me exactly what I wanted to know.

I did 'test the nation' but don't know much about IQ - this book answered just about all the questions I had floating about in my head! Like what it predicts, what causes some people to be smarter than others & so on. Read it!
