4.0 out of 5 stars Drive, Race and Chill, 22 Mar 2007
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Test Drive Unlimited offers the player a scale representation of the Hawaiian island Oahu and most of its road system, together with a collection of high performance sports cars and motorcycles to explore and take part in races. You only start with a limited amount of virtual cash - enough to purchase one house and car but can improve your financial standing by racing for prize money (against AI competitors or in time trials), or doing odd jobs such as delivering parcels, ferrying passengers or transferring hire cars (the latter is by far the most lucrative).

The 3D world created for TDU offers some of the best graphics I have ever seen in a PC game - the only slight downer is no diurnal effects, you can only drive during the daytime. However the surroundings look stunningly realistic - gone are the cruciform trees or backdrops of earlier games in this genre, even the grass and random shrubs are in full 3D!

As regards gameplay, you can if you wish just drive around looking at the scenery and indeed this is required to some extent as you can't jump to a race, dealer or other location until you've visited in real time. However at some point you will want to expand your portfolio of vehicles and acquire more property to store them. At this point some frustration can creep in as many of the challenges - even the delivery missions - are subject to ridiculously tight time limits making it impossible to complete. This is not helped by the physics implementation of the cars which seems rather unrealistic and arcadey. The vehicles have far too much inertia which means holding down the gas to keep moving and in turn means steering around tight corners is very difficult. In fact, controlling the vehicles below 60 MPH is almost impossible!

At times one gets the impression TDU is a little confused in which genre it sits. It has elements of The Sims and GTA (though you can't leave the vehicle at all).

However the best part for me and why the game gets a four star rating rather than three, is the sublime scenery and the dedication to detail offering a large virtual world to explore. If you enjoy motorsport games or are just an admirer of fine scenery lovingly recreated, then TDU is definitely for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Racer, 21 Mar 2007

Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Firstly i'll give the spec of my machine and settings. I have an AMD Athlon 64 +3200 Processor with 1Gb of RAM and an nvidia 7600 GS chipset with 512Mb of video RAM. To get the game to run smoothly at a decent frame rate i reduced the resolution from default to 800 x 600, turned on HDR (it's an option in the settings of the game) and now it plays fine.

To start with i mainly bought this game for the graphics and from what i'd heard. Not a true racer like Gran Turismo on the playstation but a bit of fun none the less. And On the whole i have to agree, i've played it for about a week now and it's still proving good fun to get in my ferrari and zoom around the island. One gripe at the moment is that i don't seem to be able to get my Logic 3 controller to work with the game so i'm using the keyboard. In my opinion this makes the game a lot more difficult than it needs to be so hopefully i'll get the joypad working.

In any case it's still a really fun game. Don't expect most machines to be able to take the default graphics settings but it still looks great at lower settings. Like i say, it's not a true racer, it's much more arcade in style but that makes it great as a pick up and play game.

5.0 out of 5 stars The streets will never be safe again!, 12 April 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game a week ago and it is taking over my life. The graphics are excellent and the game offers a good variety of challenges. I would recommend having a steering wheel, it definitly has its advantages over the keyboard. I have a new, high spec PC though, running Vista (dual core processor 2.4 GHz, 2 Gig RAM and a top range graphics card).
