Amazon.co.uk Review

The Terrorist is a remarkable Indian portrait of a suicide bomber. Ayesha Dharker (who appears in Star Wars, Episode II) gives a heart-rending performance as Malli, a 19-year-old girl whose loved ones have died in an unnamed conflict. From the harsh opening, in which Malli executes a traitor, the film follows her river journey--evoking thoughts of Apocalypse Now--and preparations to turn herself into a human bomb. Then Malli learns something that makes her question her assumptions, and as she rediscovers her humanity the drama builds to one of the most nerve-wracking conclusions in recent cinema.

By using generic names such as the Leader and the VIP the film assumes universal relevance, depicting how violence and expediency can turn people into terrorist killing machines. Yet despite the material there is extraordinary poetic beauty in writer, cinematographer and director Santosh (Asoka) Sivan's presentation. He fills the screen with astounding images, precisely composed, focused and lit, while incorporating haunting symbols of love and hate, life and death, memories and dreams. The evocative use of sound also contributes to an extremely atmospheric experience and the result is an intense, subtly powerful film which will appeal to anyone entranced by Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) or Three Colours Blue (1993).--Gary S Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching story, 7 Nov 2002

(REAL NAME)
This is a simple, well acted story of a female Tamil terrorist on a mission to assassinate a high ranking government official. Dedicated to her cause and uttterly ruthless her resolve to conduct a suicide mission starts to dissolve in a sea of maternal feelings once she realises she is pregnant.

This is no ordinary film: skilful photography, a actress with great talent and an absorbing storyline make this a must see. Forget the Bollywood trash, this is a film worthy of Satyajit Ray himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars STRIKING AND SENSITIVE, 17 Jun 2008
One or two reviewers here seem to have missed the point of the film. It takes a fairly low key approach to how ideals of terrorism and personal feelings come into conflict within an individual. It does contain strong drama but is not really film about terrorists as such. Its about love and respect for life set against what a regime demands. Very well photographed and I disagree with the previous viewer, I think it is well acted and intelligently written. Recommended for the more open-minded viewer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wet, wet, wet, 28 Dec 2005
I had high expectations for this film, and I was so disappointed. The storyline is thin and not very believable in places. For example, the main character is comforting a dying comrade after he has been shot, the comrade is barely able to keep his eyes open and has passed away by morning, but the main character becomes pregnant! The director clearly liked his star because he gets her wet at every, frequent opportunity - rain, shower or river. As for the star - well she can do one expression very well, so she keeps it on her face permanently! This film is clearly the director's fantasy played out, unapologetically for the big screen; wet skin, guns, more wet skin and so on...It is also slightly disturbing that John Malvovich has endorsed this film when there are so many genuinely fantastic Asian movies!

I have to agree with the previous two reviewers. I was expecting substance and ended up with shallow, indifferent film-making of a questionable standard. Read more
