Book Description

2 Jan 2001

‘Blessed are the meek, for they shall be stamped upon.’ From the massively successful author that brought you exploding sheep (Before & After) comes the conspiracy theory to end them all.

If you’re a cynic, you’re a sucker. ‘They’ want you to believe in aliens, UFOs and ghosts, because if you go chasing lies, you never get to the truth. ‘They’ are the ultra-secret world ‘Committee’ – the real decision makers who tell governments what to do, dictate which way the stock market’s heading, start up a few wars when things get boring. They’ve had five centuries’ experience at the top to know that nothing spreads a rumour faster than a carefully worded denial. Unfortunately, the ‘Committee’ have been so busy manipulating the entire globe they haven’t realised that they themselves are being manipulated.

From opposite sides of the globe, former US commando Frank MacIntyre, and UFO enthusiast Dave Pierce, are about to stumble on the biggest conspiracy theory of all. And it’s a discovery that threatens to destabalise the whole planet.

The meek have just put on their boots, and they’re ready to do a bit of stamping themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, amusing, delightful. Buy Buy Buy 4 April 2001

Format:Paperback
This is the second book of Matthew Thomas's books I have read (the other being "Before & After", which was wickedly amusing).

This is even better than the first, showing an absolute masterly control of subtleness and humour that had me rolling in the aisles of the tubes, much to the dismay of the morbid monday morning travellers. Once I picked it up I had to carry on reading, which meant I had two exceptionally late evenings and a rather unimpressed group of associates in the mornings.

Its about a weird twisted conspiracy theory that will blow your mind, sucking in people left right and center and culimnating in an explosivley amusing ending. It has action to rival Mr Archer, a blow of humour along the lines of Mr Pratchett, and imgaination that could possibly be compared to that of Mr Clarke's.

I cannot wait for the next book. A super read.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY entertaining 6 May 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This novel is, well, pretty damn good. The simile-laden prose is rather entertaining; also the descriptions of poor nerdy Dave's mangled love life are quite funny and suspiciously accurate, and the Watcher conspiracy is really well thought out.The account of the attack on Urgistan is absolutely brilliant. A wonderful romp across the globe, chokkers with some hiliarious scenes; however there is always a dark undercurrent and it looks a bit as though the author is quite dissilusioned with society, the media and politics, providing some real depth to the story All in all a great read.

If you enjoyed 'Before and After' (as I did) you'll love Matthew Thomas' new one, 'Terror Firma'. It has many of the same qualities but it's clear to see his style has matured - his writing is more rounded and subtle.

All the usual humour is there however. I won't give too much of the plot away, just say it involves a very nasty alien(?) plot to ensnare mankind. 'Terror Firma' is a real page-turner that had me laughing out loud from the very beginning - superb!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes 1 Nov 2006
Format:Paperback
WWho would have thought, aliens not only living on Earth but holding such influential posts across the world. Ok, not quite an original general storyline, but the way this book approaches it is fairly original, with some very weird and wonderful twists.

At times you can see what's coming further along in the story, but equally you couldn't guess it now, and the fact you are waiting adds something to the suspense. There is nothing deep and meaningful to be had, but light hearted quirky entertainment with a good few laughs thrown in.

The book starts off slower and serious enough, developing the characters not only in description but in an understanding of what their life means, but the amusing twisted bits are dribbled in slowly enough to keep your attention, by the end there isn't a whole lot of serious stuff left, new characters become a little more surreal and the plot dissolving into a more quick paced action affair.

A good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addictive reading! 3 April 2002

Format:Paperback
Even better (if that's possible) than the previous book. Really found it hard to put down.
Very much a Douglas Adams style, but perhaps more current and relevant?

Matthew Thomas claims that he has nothing against the Shadow Government and alien manipulators ruthlessly running our lives for their own benefits. Well, such a thing cannot strictly be perceived in his substantial "Terror Firma", Thomas's plump follow-up novel to his best-selling "Before & After". "Terror Firma" lends its parodic inspiration from a convoluted mish-mash of such films as "ET", "Men In Black" and "The Matrix" as well as acting as a variety of comic sci-fi equivalent to "Weekend At Bernie's", (many filmgoers should now recall that this *wasn't* particularly avant garde satire). Nevertheless, Thomas's "Terror Firma" is reasonably humorous, reasonably inventive comic fantasy fluff, and a worthy successor to "Before & After" (which included Nostradamus, exploding sheep and the End of the World). Thomas is the master when it comes to cynical observations of the fallibility of humanity, and as such comes across as a black humorist the likes of Kurt Vonnegut. Nonetheless, "Terror Firma" reads more like an Andrew Harman novel (its similarity to Harman's "It Came From On High" is ironically coincidental): it is dolloped with sometimes witty Pratchett-imitating footnotes. "Terror Firma" includes multitudinous amounts of Matthew Thomas's oft so-called 'funny' similes, "Blackadder"-esque in context...but this time, no-one should really doubt Thomas's skill at turning these silly but memorable catchphrases ("Just like Upton Park, this bloke was only two stops short of Barking....
