Product Description

Synopsis

In demonstrations that allow the reader to follow step by step, Bruno Lucchesi shows how to work with terracotta, from modelling the human form to firing and finishing. He first introduces the tools and materials used in terracotta sculpture, then explains the basic principles of working with terracotta clay, emphasizing how to construct pieces so that they will fire successfully. Next, in a series of demonstrations, Lucchesi shows how to approach a variety of sculptures, each with its own requirements.

For me, the book is inspirational, best of all it tells me succintly, how to get from (a) to (b). Many books of the same topic seem to be so daunting and best put on the coffee table. This book is a step by step manual. I like the way it shows you the armatures to use and how to make your own. The small and compact kiln he uses is of type we all have at our disposal. The work he shows you is not of monumental proportions, is achievable and can be fired at home. The clay to use, the why's and wherefores are all there. This is an excellent buy for beginner and professional alike.

Its difficult to know if a book will be any good by just looking at the cover. All of the pages within this book are as inspirational as the cover. Terracotta by Bruno Luchessi is a must have for anybody who is looking for ideas and techniques, whether they are just starting out or have been Sculpting for a length of time.

New to sculpture 5 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book for people who wish to learn more about clay sculpture and how to finish their work to a high level. It is possibly better to use it in conjunction with lessons in modelling from life as books never tell you the whole story of the human body and different schools teach methods for making armatures.
It is also less detailed than the other book by the author dealing with making a model of the female body, using the same sculptor. This book does list the medical names for muscles and bones, but while a useful companion, might put off the inexperienced sculptor.
