I knew LED's were coming but couldn't resist a bargain, then with the advent of LED's a few years ago becoming more mainstream my Maglite has become redundant except perhaps as a burglar clobberer (I always keep a dazzling petzl Myo XP / RXP these days) However didn't wan't to throw my Mag out just because it was deemed old technology!

Terralux have been around a good while now & have good reports of stated Lumens so I took the plunge & am heartily satisfied, it now puts out as much as my Myo xp ..so good enough for the majority of torch requirements.

Am now showing it off to my similarly "stuck" in the past friends as an affordable alternative.

Maglite got a bit sloppy & slow as a result their torches are still good but not the best, this upgrade levels out the field somewhat.

Recommended purchase AS an upgrade to an existing unit, however there are far better out there than maglite these days who do not produce the once highly regarded product anymore & are now "just another brand"
Do bear in mind that to put out the lightpower the bulb still gets warm, especially as this is an adaptation of a classic not a ground up design build, basically airflow is limited, so don't use your Torch for longer than 10 minute bursts i you can help it ....most folk will just use in short bursts a few seconds to a minute,or three, for long light times use an led head-torch such as a myo xp petzl, I now use this as my back up torch in the car & for general duties!

As the title suggests, these LED drop-in modules made by TerraLUX are simply brilliant. Brilliant in terms that the light they produce is absolutely fantastic compared to the incandescent bulbs that the D and C cell Maglites use. Having owned a 2D Maglite for over 20 years, I was becoming increasingly frustrated that my trusty old torch, once the pinnacle of torch design, was becoming more and more dated compared to new cheaper LED rivals. The dim glow from the incandescent bulb didn't cut it any more compared to the revolution of white LED's. Then I found TerraLUX and I now love my Maglite more than ever. I did not purchase mine from Amazon, but I paid the same price from a UK torch website. I felt a review would maybe influence those of you who are thinking about it. My advice to you is get one of these if you own a 2 or 3 cell incandescent Maglite. It will bring your old trusty Maglite right up to date. The beam focuses right down to a tight white spot, perfectly round and far more defined than the bulb ever did and the LED emits a pure white light, much whiter than the blue tint emitted from some other LED torches I have tried. The 140 lumens of output is claimed to be up to 7 times brighter than the incandescent bulb, and trust me, it is. I will be also buying a version made for the 4D Maglite as I am so impressed. Well done to TerraLUX for making these.

I have a standard 2D Maglite with an incandescant bulb and also a 2D LED Maglite. I purchased the TerraLux upgrade to replace the standard bulb. The result is far superior to the old incansescant bulb, but when compared alongside the LED Maglite, it is not quite as bright.

As this upgrade is quite expensive, I have only given it three stars, since you can buy a new 2D LED Maglite for less than £25, so it is not amazing value for money, but does a decent job.

I bought this TerraLUX LED upgrade for a two (D) cell Maglite which is part of our history, plus thanks to its weight and build it feels as though it might be useful for fending off intruders. Fitting this upgrade is easy and certainly the light output is whiter and brighter than the conventional bulb it replaces. My reservation is that the increase in light output is not as great as I had hoped and it certainly does not benchmark too well in that respect against my arsenal of other LED torches. That then takes me to the other dimension of my issue and that is the cost of this upgrade - LEDs are cheap as chips and you could buy a decent quality LED torch for the price of this upgrade LED - on reflection it is rather expensive in proportion to the increase in performance it offers. I am however, intending to keep it as it will keep our big chunky Maglite in use and the nostalgia attached to it makes it worth it, but, if it weren't for that factor I'd say consider the economics carefully.

An improvement over the incandescent bulbs: it IS brighter (but not much) and the beam is tidier too. Installation is a doddle.

It loses two stars for the following reasons: 1) it is a tad expensive and 2) "UP TO SEVEN TIMES BRIGHTER" includes ZERO - which is closer to the mark!

Having said that, this thing is only rated at one hundred and forty lumens (low by today's standards), but with its big reflector and first-class optical system, the 3 x D Maglite gives you a more USEFUL beam than the "pocket rockets" I have borrowed. Cheap, high output torches eat batteries and burn hands because they are just toys; the Maglite does neither because it is a TOOL, and there's a reason why the emergency services have used them for decades.
