Fox are renowned for cancelling many of the tv shows they air without giving them a real chance and Terra Nova is unfortunately one of those shows. Are thirteen episodes really enough to get people fully immersed in a show and give it a chance to live out its potential? I don't think so.
As for the show, admittedly there are many incidents where it descends into cliche but that lessens as the season progresses and gradually the plots take some unexpected and intriguing arcs. Spielberg clearly had a hand in this show, it has sets and landscapes reminiscent of the Jurassic Park trilogy and the dinos themselves are brilliantly done with some movie quality special effects (particularly in the awesome season finale). The concept is as follows: earth is dying, the air poisoned by mankinds ravaging of nature and so when a time rift opens, offering a door into a cleaner, admittedly far more dangerous, past what remains of the government seizes it and starts shipping people through in a very stargate like way. The Shannons are one of those families and thus become the protagonists for the entire season. Some might say that this is where Terra Nova made its mistake as the family are given a nice clean home, jobs and their daughter feeds some dinosaurs and its all, at first, too clihed, cutesy and geared towards a young audience. Yes, there are some tense scenes in a dino chase and guns and a strange, violent group of outsiders called the sixers- but in the pilot and the first couple of episodes it never gets gritty enough or mature enough.
However, as the episodes leave behind the formulaic, 'case of the week' plots and intriguing questions begin to arise, Terra Nova begins to take off and i did find myself addicted and very entertained.

I can't understand people giving this only one or two stars. This series has the potential to go for many seasons, and so what if there isn't any swearing! There wasn't any (that I can remember) in Star Gate SG1 - and that went on for TEN seasons. As for the weapons only being non-lethal! If you only open your eyes and pay attention you'll see there are lethal weapons. The non-lethal ones are for use against other people. I felt like crying when a friend told me that the series had been cancelled. Why does this world have so many with no imagination? When I think of other wonderful series that have been chopped such as Firefly, then I wonder what really goes on behind the scenes.

Really enjoyed this show, and towards end of season 1 showed great potential and had me hooked, but then it appeared that the show got cancelled, bound for the graveyard of murdered shows like so many before it. And it is because of this, I only give it 3 stars. i cannot believe they are actually releasing this on DVD here in the UK, knowing there is essentially no ending, so be warned, if you buy this you will get drawn in, enjoy it, and then finally face disappointment as you realize there will be no more episodes.

If you are willing to accept an unfinished story, then buy it, as it is good, just be prepared for a sudden ending and disappointment. US networks, try to have a little more patience before you go cancelling shows...

I always love a TV series that gives the viewer not only a set of characters that they can get behind but gives them a journey into a Science Fiction world that not only keeps you glued but also gives an overall arc that is not only fascinating but also gives a darker edge to the individual episodes.

That and more was achieved with Terra Nova and whilst its unfortunately one of the casualties of One Series Culling, it was a series that gave the viewer dinosaurs, survival as well as human interest. It had some great talent, Jason O'Mara (Life on Mars US), Steven Lang (Avatar) and with the might of Spielberg behind it was a series that had so much going for it.

All in, whilst only thirteen episodes, it was a series that had a solid grounding for the future with enough threads to not only expand for quite some time but also to keep it going for multiple outings. A great shame that its been cancelled but overall, definitely something that I really enjoyed.

A shame that Fox decided to axe this show. This is Spielberg at his best. The Observer said it's like Lost meets Jurrasic Park, and they're not wrong. Very strong story line, and the visual effects are excellent, accommpanied by a strong cast. The idea that humanity is given a second chance is gripping, and of course, blighted by the greedy who view it as a chance to fill their pockets. Real edge of the seat action, and leaves you wanting the next installment. Terra Nova - The Complete Series [DVD]
Although this was only released on DVD on the 24th, my pre-ordered copy arrived that day. Needless to say, I had a Terra Nova evening! Here's hoping that Fox come to their senses and make series two. There is still so much of the story to discover.

I think the bad reviews are a bit harsh and, in my opinion, based on very unrealistic expectations. Everyone latched on to the fact that it was a spielberg creation and of course it had dinosaurs in it. The truth is, this is its own beast. There are moments when it losses it, about 3/4 the way through, but it saves it self towards the end and in fact, even the lull isn't anything to throw your popcorn out for.

I think this has been a cracking series, a must for sci-fi fans. True sci-fi nuts will get this, these other tourists should go back to watching 'Lost' or something more mainstream. Sci-fi fans, give this a go!
