What makes this book work so well is the combination of two main themes: firstly, how would (near future) society react to everyone suddenly having access to flight? How would it affect crime/society/the economy? This would be enough for a lot of SF books, but woven into it is the main character - a familiar enough tough cop-type at the very beginning - recovering both mentally and physically from a horrific accident mid-flight while apprehending a criminal. (His symptoms and eventual recovery felt so convincing to me that I'm tempted to think the author drew on some personal experience to write them.) All this is unpretentiously delivered in the form of a well thought-out crime mystery that builds to a satisfying climax. It's a short book and I can't say it thrashes out the material in much detail, but page for page it's a really enjoyable read that leaves you thinking.
