Teresa Sterne: A career that really mattered. 8 Oct 2013
By John Pearsall - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Teresa Sterne helped bring some pretty important twentieth century music to the international scene
by discovering and encouraging talented composers and performers while she worked at Nonesuch.

In her first couple years at Nonesuch Records, it quickly became obvious she was the right person for the post.
She pushed the scrappy little classical label into international prominence through a combination of artful
persuasion and unerring taste as she cajoled, commissioned and recorded promising new composers and performers.
In addition, she obtained American distribution rights from several small European catalogs and Nonesuch introduced us
to previously unheard baroque,classical and contemporary compositions. Finally, there was a unique, under-appreciated
Nonesuch catalog featuring location recordings of ethnic and tribal music from exotic international locales.

I've recently come to realize how much of my twentieth century instrumental and electronic music collection rests on
A&R decisions made by Teresa Stearne at Nonesuch. She even forwarded a fan letter for me to the late George Rochberg;
written in response to the 1973 Nonesuch release of his Third String Quartet, in pre-internet days, I had no idea
where to send my fan letter. So, I sent it to Ms. Sterne at Nonesuch and she graciously forwarded it to the composer
at the U. of Pennsylvania and in a few weeks, I got a handwritten reply from a surprised and gracious Professor Rochberg;
it seems he had never received a fan letter from anyone. Mission accomplished.

The first CD in "A Portrait" highlights Ms. Sterne's earlier career as a promising concert pianist, mostly from the 1940's. The second CD
consists of a generous compendium of important Nonesuch releases that highlight her twenty years with the label. Also, there's a thick booklet,
a treasure trove of contemporary musical lore featuring tributes from several luminaries who worked closely with Ms. Sterne.

American music was incredibly blessed on the day Ms. Sterne was hired by Nonesuch and twentieth century music
remains forever in her debt.
