Gripping Stuff. 20 Jan 2010
Format:Hardcover
Hugh's adventures take place within the larger context of Mexican history, making a refreshing change from the often trifling linear narratives than this sort of travel writing can entail. Some of the situations which he finds himself in simply beggar belief, and if you don't want to head south of the border after finishing it you should check for a pulse.

For self confessed petrolheads like me, Hugh's relationship with his car plays on the heartstrings like nothing else can. It's worth buying for the automotive sections alone.

For anyone who ever stepped over the threshold into an adventure, even if it was just in their minds eye, this is certainly a read for you.

If you can stretch to it, go for the hardback, the cover is a work of art.

Tequil-aaahhhh! 25 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
A proper travel writer's book. Hugh's great knowledge and deep love of Mexico leaps off the pages. A fast-paced infectious read, he thunders south in an Oldmobile 98 gas guzzler telling extraordinary tales of people, culture, history, ancients, lifeway and the experiences of travel in central America.

Think Steinbeck, Wild Bunch, Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia and a twist of the laconic spahetti westerns. A rip-roaring read and highly entertaining!

Tequila Oil 23 Jun 2009
By DTHUNT
Format:Hardcover
Recommended by Wanderlust Magazine.
The sections on the 70's are quite good.Having travelled in parts of Mexico in the past 12 months some things have not changed.
Richard Grant,'Bandit Roads',Little,Brown,2008,is also an enjoyable read about 'the lawless heart of Mexico'.
