Everybody suffers from pain at some stage of their lives, but not everybody wants to tackle it by taking endless drugs and experiencing invasive surgical procedures. An effective, powerful alternative is the medically-approved electrotherapy known as TENS.
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It consists of a small unit, attached to the body via electrode pads, through which a harmless electrical signal is passed. The sensation is not painful or unpleasant, and can be likened to "pins and needles", or even gentle massage. This signal triggers the nerve endings, activating the pain gate and boosting the release of endorphins. The pain gate effectively stops pain signals from reaching the brain, whilst endorphins are the body's own natural defensive mechanism to ease pain.
TENS is used by physiotherapists, doctors and midwives, as well as individual patients with varying degrees of pain. In the past, TENS units were clunky, stationary, expensive and difficult to adjust. With two independently-controlled channels, the TouchTENS can be used with either two or four electrodes simultaneously. Although it is supplied with standard 50x50mm pads, its universal electrode fittings mean that it can be used with pads of different shapes and sizes, depending on the type and location of your pain. Each channel offers 15 levels of intensity, allowing the unit to be easily set at the level which you find most comfortable.
The additions of a timer, two-way belt clip, lock button and two-year guarantee mean that the TouchTENS is a simple, practical way to manage your pain.
The TouchTENS is entirely safe, even with long-term use. I was putting up with a lot of pain in my shoulder. Now I can set this up each morning and it's incredible I get relief.
The only downside is the electrical conductive pads, which are always the weakness on TENS machines. They never seem to last 30 times, as stated. They can be refreshed by re-wetting, but are very liable to coming loose at the edges during the day. Especially when you have it on all day, as I do. When that happens it becomes a little uncomfortable (slight stinging sensation).
I tend to only use one chanel most of the time, but having two available is great.
The batteries have lasted a month so far of daily use.
You can buy multi packs of replacement TENS pads from the manufacturer directly at a fairly good price.
I don't know how I'd manage without it.

This is my first TENS machine and I wanted something that was going to be easy to use. The preset programmes are ideal for me as I can have a quick flick through the small guide book to see where electrodes should be placed, then plug and go.
I've had good success with both back pain/sciatica and with neck/shoulder tensions and migraines - although for both I tried a couple of different electrode positions before I found the right combinations for me (as the booklet says may be the case). I've also used it for period pain/cramps and tried it with IBS cramps too though not experimented as much with these it did help. I use it mainly for accute attacks as I take medication which keep chronic pain mostly under control. Sometimes the chronic pain breaks through or for some reason an accute attack of pain is triggered and for me these are the times when it's very useful.
It comes with a case (a bit like a wash bag but clear) to keep everything in which is I admit a little bit naff and the catch broke on it on day one - but it's enough to keep everything together and tidy anyway. The booklet fits in here too so I can easily refer to the diagrams of electrode positioning and consult the quick chart of what the preset programmes are best to use for. In mine I can keep the TENS, leads, spare electrodes, booklet, Pre-TENS Skin Preparation bottle and surgical tape with dispenser.
I've dabbled with most of the preset programmes and it's great for me to be able to try different things without needing to figure out positions on dials. However if you're looking for a specific frequency or rate or whatever then you may want to try a different machine as this one will dictate that with the presets.
The wires supplied are long enough for my needs including when I've had one set of electrodes on the back of my thigh/lower back and another on my shoulders/neck. The belt clip is enough to go on the waistband of my trousers but if I bend over it does tend to fall off. But the machine is just about small enough to go in a pocket too.
The electrodes supplied with the machine are very good and lasted for a few uses for me. I did take care of them but I tend to only get a few uses at most maybe because of my disability i can't shower and exfoliate as much as I would like to so they have to do a tougher job.
If you want something that needs limited understanding of TENS positioning and technology this is a good unit as the preset programmes mean you can just start using it straight away. The diagrams of electrode positioning cover quite a lot of things but you may want to buy or book or consult some online maps to find even more types of pain and discomfort that it can help.

Bought this for my wife, who has been suffering agonies with sciatica; this type of 'Tens@ machine was recommended by many friends. However, (and Amazon may want to take this up with the manufacturer), where the check list clearly states that 4 'stick-on' type electrodes are included in the kit, THEY ARE NOT! Second time round, I thought, "Blow it, I'll buy them separately" and ordered a pack of electrodes. Delivery, as always, prompt and we finally went into battle with my wife's sciatica. TENS gave great relief and I'd recommend it.
