3.0 out of 5 stars Edgeless, 29 Mar 2009
Lets start off by saying this isn't their 3rd album as one reviewer had claimed. It is in fact their 5th full album but their 4th studio album.

I have always thought their 2nd album was the real deal full of old style blugrass foot stompers. To be honest i haven't heard much from the first album so can't comment there (Wawa album) the 3rd was disappointing whilst the 4th album Big Iron World showed real promise and had some excellen tracks such as Down Home Girl and I hear them all.

This new offering after the first listen is regretfully disappointing and didn't inspire me to listen again.

4.0 out of 5 stars One thing missing..., 8 Mar 2009
... Dave Rawlings - he produced the last two albums beautifully and his absence here is a bit tragic. The songs are as strong as ever - you should listen to the live versions on youtube to be convinced of that - but Don Was's syrup-y production has less finesse & has emasculated this outing to a large extent.

Just shows, change isn't always progress. Bring back D.R.'s machine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 6 Dec 2008

This, the third OCMS album, is a real step up.Having negotiated the dangers of the tricky second album by keeping it short and sweet and more of the same, this time they've taken a much more mature route and accordingly have changed producers to Don Was, not always the best choice, but here he does a good job. There's still plenty of bluegrass, but this album shows off their other influences and they're as diverse as Chuck Berry and Neil Young. There's a very strong Gram Parsons influence that encompasses his work with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers as well as his solo albums. And there are echoes of Jackson Browne, too. All, in my book, pretty good artists to be influenced by.Of course, all this might put off some fans who just want more of the same, but bluegrass, like all genres, can be pretty limiting and these guys have obviously absorbed far too many influences and are far too talented to be stuck in the same old groove their entire careers.

I was going to pick the standout tracks for me,but it's easier and quicker to just say that Crazy Eyes sounds like filler to me.And the Gill Landry penned Mary's Kitchen comes across as slightly second division in the company of the other songs here, although I would highly recommend Landry's own solo album to anyone who likes OCMS.My favourite track is probably their version of Lift Him Up ,which is slightly tongue in cheek and yet still moving in its own way.Highly recommended, but if you're still not sure check out their site on myspace, which currently features four songs from this album.

I stand corrected;this is the fifth OCMS album, although the first two have been unavailable for at least a couple of years and as far as I can tell are currently only available on import. Incidentally, the first album's called Eutaw, not wawaw.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay
There are some good songs on this disc, but compared to their debut album it has no kick, I think O.C.M.S maybe a one trick pony.
