An Excellent Walking Guide Book, 9 Oct 2011
This review is from: Tenerife Landscapes: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) (Paperback)
My wife and I are fairly experienced hikers but not mountain athletes. We walked several of the trails listed in this book from a base in Puerto de la Cruz, using the local buses to travel to and from them. It has to be said that there isn't much easy walking - as in flat, even paths - in the north of Tenerife and the walks in the book reflect that fact.
I found this Landscapes book reliable and full of facts, which I expected. I've used other books in the series since I was a novice walker and found the walk descriptions generally sufficient for finding my way, using the limited mapping, a compass and a bit of common sense when necessary to overcome the inevitable route-finding challenges. I only bother with more if I expect to be going into difficult, remote country - in my experience the walk summaries in Landscapes books clearly indicate likely difficulties. The key is to read the walk description thoroughly and assess whether it's suitable.
My favourite walk was probably route 6. In fact we wanted to do a circuit starting and ending at La Caldera, so we started out on route 5 and then took route 6 clockwise (i.e. in reverse) from the point where it crossed route 5. It was a fairly tough but outstanding walk, although some of what were presumably once exposed bits seemed overprotected by barriers.
The Anaga is spectacular and not to be missed. On a miserable day we set out to walk part of route 24 in reverse, from Casa Carlos through Taborno, around the Roque de Taborno and back to Taborno for the bus. We were fortunate that the rain stopped as we walked and the Roque itself was sheltering the difficult bit of the circuit from the wind when we reached it. Once on the circuit proper, a stretch of rather overgrown and eroded path, perched above the sea, struck me as the most dangerous part of the venture and I was thankful to have walking poles with me. A bit of route finding was necessary and a second goats' pen, described in the notes, had all but disappeared. A short section of the path continuing around the Roque was very exposed but we found it easy to negotiate. The notes spell out that a circuit of the Roque is a serious undertaking. Had it been unsafe to do the circuit, a walk stopping short of the Roque itself would still have been worthwhile for the striking views.
Notes updating the book are available to download free of charge from the Sunflower Books website.
The bus service on Tenerife was pretty good and, armed with an up-to-date timetable, we didn't experience any major problems getting buses at the end of our walks. The buses were fairly punctual and the drivers generally polite and helpful. We used a Bono Card, available from main bus stations and some shops and bars (ask for details at Tourist Information), for its practicality and fare saving. Finally, for an experience, join the mountain bikers on the early Saturday bus from Puerto Cruz to El Portillo.

The guide to confusion, 11 Feb 2011
This review is from: Tenerife Landscapes: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) (Paperback)
I must give the author of the book credit for being very enthusiastic about Tenerife and trying to make a lot of interesting walks. Unfortunately his directions turned out to be so vague as to make us often end our walk in some unplanned and unpredictable places. Although the language is rich, but maybe that's the problem with the guide? I'd prefer more specific and technical descriptions.
Just to mention: I have a lot of Sunflower books which we've used to organise walks in different countries, so I have something to compare with.

Invaluable historical, botanical and cultural background information, 26 July 2009
This review is from: Tenerife Landscapes: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) (Paperback)
Includes both well-known "must do" walks and lesser known routes. Information on walks includes distance, any vertiginous or very strenuous sections and the amount of ascent and descent involved. Maps all have altitude lines and any vertiginous parts are clearly marked. For each walk alternatives are offered that are shorter, avoid difficult parts of the route or offer circular versions of walks that are one-way. Accounts are peppered with information on natural history (with Spanish and botanical names provided and some drawings of the more common but typical flora). Route instructions are detailed and comprehensive - if you do find yourself taking a wrong turn, you will soon realise your mistake through further reading. Although the information on how to get to the start of the walks is aimed at bus passengers, we managed to find the starting points (by car) easily and parking was never a problem. Interestingly, many of the walkers we met (of various nationalities) also used the sunflower guide, perhaps indicating that it is the most practical and definitive guide available, partly due to its handy size. My only criticism would be that the walks around Las Canadas could have included more geological background information. The other guides that we used e.g. for the Pyrenees, Picos de Europa, La Palma & El Hierro and Andalucia, were similarly practical and informative.
